Development Dynamics of Young Stands of Sessile Oak after Clear Cutting during the Conversion of Coppice Forests in South Slovakia     pdf     HR     EN 495
Summary: Coppice forests currently take up 4.1 % of the forested area in Slovakia. Their area is systematically being decreased by conversion into seed forests. An experiment aimed at establishing the success of afforestation with sessile oak in the felling site of Turkey oak, common hornbeam and sessile oak was set up in the Forest Office Rimavska Sobota. Experimental plots were established along the southern and northern edge of the feeling site, and afforestation with sessile oak was done by planting 2-year-old seedlings and by sowing acorns. The success of afforestation was monitored and the height of plants was measured. The experiment lasted for 7 years.Better seedling growth was recorded with sowing acorns, and bigger losses occurred on the southern edges of the felling sites. Apart from sessile oak the author also studied Turkey oak and common hornbeam by monitoring their growth dynamics in the course of the experiment in order to determine the strength of competition to sessile oak. By their fourth year young sessile oak stands raised by sowing exceeded the stands raised by planting with height increment, and achieved 79.8 cm more than the latter in their fifth year.

Key words: coppice conversion; height and height increment; number of plants; sowing and planting sessile oaks; the impact of felling site edges and exposition to the success of afforestation
