Causes of stand degradation.     PDF     EN 307
Summary: Discussed were those main causes of stand degradation which can be removed or at least considerably alleviated by means of proper cultivation. Only by the knowledge of these causes it will be possible to apply the means for their removal and for raising stands of special quality.
These causes are the following:
1. Incorrect establishment of stands such as:
a) poor execution of seed cutting;
b) establishment of stands by means of species which the site conditions do not correspond as well as establishment of monocultures;
c) establishment of stands with a low number od plants per unit of area;
d) afforestation by means of weak, poorly raised seedlings as well as a poor
planting technique;
e) establishment of coppices.
2. Pelated tending of stands.
3. Poor tending of stands.
4. Scrubwoods.
The mentioned causes of stand degradation are mainly the consequence of lack of expert work on the removal of obstacles impeding the raising of high-quality stands. It is certain that so far through great efforts it has been possible to achieve considerable results in the field of tending stands, while the question of reforestation and re-establishment of stands - by creating as regular mixed stands as possible - has manifested itself so far only here and there. Often we are satisfied with natural seeding of indigenous tree species, and even with monocultures occurring even on high-productive sites, which are thus not utilized in a satisfactory manner either as to volume or quality of the standing crop.
