Usage and Energy Potential of Biomass from Wood Processing Industry in Zagreb County     pdf     HR     EN 453
Summary: The Croatian wood processing industry generates significant quantities of different wood waste. Large arising of waste wood is being produced in various forms; some 55% of incoming wood may not appear as processed timber. Most often, waste wood is being re-used only partially for covering the basic needs for heat in production (wood drying) and for heating. Significant part of this wood waste is being discarded in a variety of ways, which draws additional costs and impact on the environment. The exploiting of these quantities of wood waste could fully cover the energy consumption of wood industry processes. The existing power production units in this industry are mostly obsolete and out of order. Exploiting of the wood waste in Croatia could bring the number of benefits: the increase of energy efficiency,
the use of domestic energy source and the possibility of developing the domestic technology,
decrease of the impact on environment,
disposal of the wood waste that is otherwise regarded as trash.
This paper deals with detailed results analyze of state of the art of wood waste usage and energy potential in the Zagreb county. The analysis was conducted as a part of prefeasibility study of CHP (combined heat and power) plant project around Velika Gorica. A great advantage for project realization is existing heat network in Velika Gorica. A successful realization could encourage launching other similar projects of biomass use within wood industry in Croatia. The most important part of the analysis was an interview, which was carried out in almost all wood processing factories and sawmills in the county. Analyzed were all relevant factors as annual production and capacity, amount of generated wood waste, current usage of wood waste (own boiler room, briquetting, selling, composting, disposal and similar), annual need for energy (both electricity and heat) and existing infrastructure. The interview was carried out in the first half of the year 1999, and relevant data about timber processing and generated amount of wood waste are shown for 1997 and 1998 and estimated for the year 2000. Given results show significant, yet unused energy potential of wood waste in Zagreb county as well as non-adequate and serious state of its management.
Interviewed were more than 40 wood processing factories and sawmills in the county where 31175 tons of wood waste was produced in 1998 which gives energy potential of 0,33 PJ. Additionally, forest residues from the Zagreb county forests represent significant energy potential.

Key words: biomass; wood waste; energy
