The Hemeroby of Austrian Forest Ecosystems

Summary: This article presents the results of the project "The Hemeroby of Austrian Forest Ecosystems ". The project was launched in 1992 through an initiative of the Department for vegetation ecology and nature conservation research at University of Vienna and the Academy of Sciences. The project is part of the international research initiative of the UNESCO programme "Man and the Biosphere". It was coordinated with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in close collaboration with the Austrian Forest Inventory (Austrian Federal Forestry Research Institute).
From total of 3.88 million hactars of Austrian forests, 25 can be considered as natural, 41 have been moderately changed compared to optimal state, 27) of the forests can be refereed to as consichevebly changed by human influence. Only 7o are artifical, and hence far away from a natural forests ecosystems. This means that 2/3 of the Austrian forests correspond to the modern concept of an intact ecosystem.
