Interclonal and Clonal Differences in a Seed Orchard of European Larch (Larix decidua Mill.) near Bjelovar     pdf     HR     EN 253
Summary: The results obtained from research carried out in the clonal
seed orchard has confirmed that the properties under observation are affected
by various environmental and genotype influences. For example, the weight
and size of cone, seed germinability and seed weight are strongly influenced
by the genotype (clone), while the yield of cones and seeds are strongly affected
by the environment.

Adverse edaphic conditions, such as stagnant waters, gleying of surface
soils, and lack of nutrients in the soil lead to drastic reductions in cone and seed crops. This is why particular attention should be paid to the choice of location
and to pedological indicators in establishing future clonal seeds orchards.
Deep, well-aerated soils which are rich in nutrients should be
favoured.

In setting up a future clonal seed orchard, special attention should be paid
to the provenance, and not only to the selection of plus-trees per phenotype
within a provenance.

The sex of selected plus-trees in the sense of their male or female functioning
also plays an important role in the amount and quality of seed yield, that is,
of raised plants.

A full seed crop in a clonal seed orchard occurs every three to five years.
The crop of 1992 yielded a total of 684.23 kg of fresh cones, ranging from

14.04 kg (Clone Vo-13) to 41.50 kg (Clone Vo-8) on average. The amount of
3 7.62 kg of pure seeds (without wings) were obtained from the collected cones,
or 5.5 kg of seed from
100 kg of cones.
Clone Vo-9 had the longest cones (40.3 mm), and clone Vo-25 the shortest

(25.7 mm), while the average cone length was 32.7 mm. Clone Vo-8 yielded the
widest cones (18.5 mm), and clone Vo-27 the narrowest (14.1 mm), the average
width being 16.3 mm. The lenght-width ratio (LL-index) ranged from 1.77
(Clone Vo-25) to 1.41 (Clone Vo-7). The average ratio between the length and
width of the cone was 2.95. The dimensions of the cones point to the fact that
the clones from the orchard belong to the Alpine provenance, but of the lowland
altitudinal race.
The average weight of 100 fresh cones was 334.3 g, and ranged from 210.0
g (Vo-10 and Vo-13) to 527.5 g (Vo-8). The average weight of 1000 seeds was

5.3 g, ranging between 3.9 g (Vo-10) to 7.5 g (controlpopulation Varaždinbreg).
The average germinating energy of the seed collected in the seed orchard
was 45.6%. The highest germinating energy, amouting to 72.0%, was displayed
by Clone Vo-15, and the lowest, of 18.0%, by the control population
Bukovje. The average full germinating vigour was 48.4%, and ranged from
72.5% in Clone Vo-15 to 18.0% in the Bukovje population.
