Summary: The article deals with problems in energy production, an important segment of the economy. In Croatia there are no valid balances of energy supply and consumption, let alone clear objectives (concept) of its development and strategies for reaching these objectives. As a consequence, the price of energy products is excessively high in relation to the purchasing power of the population. The possibilities of renewable resources are mentioned, and electrical energy is dealt with in more detail. Uneconomical operation of the electro-energetic system in Croatia, apart from the very high price of electrical energy, also causes needless environmental pollution. In other fields of energy production (gas, oil and its derivatives, thermal energy), the situation is even worse than in the production of electrical energy. As a consequence, the price of oil derivatives, particularly of gas, is even higher compared to that of electrical energy in relation to the purchasing power of the population and to the situation in other European countries. In addition, the environment is unfavourably affected.
