Some Features and Problems Concerning Silver Fir (Abies alba Mill.) Selection Forests in Croatia pdf HR EN | 91 | |
Summary: The fir (Abies alba Mill.) selection forests in Croatia cover 29% of the total forested area, or 540 641 hectares. They have a wood volume of 102 203 300 m3, of which 30 975 420 m\ or 30%, belongs to the fir. The remaining 70% of the mixture is mostly the common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and, to a lesser extent, common spruce (Picea abies Karst.) and other deciduous trees. The economic and general functions of these forests have a very high value. The general functions are reflected in a number of social and ecological functions. An ideal selection forest structure consists of trees of different heights and thicknesses per surface unit, where a normal amount of growing stock is distributed in the selection structure, providing highest increment, optimal natural regeneration and stability. The fir selection forests of today are marked by a disturbed, often extinct structure, causing a series of changes, some of which are: -inadequate or completely missing natural regeneration of the fir; -increase or decrease of normal wood volume, leading to reduced increment; -ageing, physiological weakening, and dieback of dominant trees; in 1992, 20.4% of the tree crowns were damaged by 60%; in 1993, thisfigure was 15%, in 1994 it was 15.2%; -negative impacts of acid rain and other pollutants of air, water and soil; -changes in the stands microclimate; -the degradation of forest soil caused by weeds, lessened microbiological activity, erosion and raw humus deposits; the occurrence of secondary pests which quicken the tree dieback; -aggressive beech expansion into the fir territory, especially in southern rocky expositions and southern edges of the fir areal, combined with artificially increased proportion of spruce-trees. All the factors mentioned above are contributing to the negative trends in the selection forest development in Croatia, the causes of which can be classified in three groups: a) The application of improper silvicultural measures, especially as to the felling cycle, the intensity and felling methods. b) The appearance of long dry periods in the global climate. c) Adverse impacts of acid rain, air, water and soil pollutants. Acting simultaneously, some of these factors cannot be influenced. We should therefore apply adequate silvicultural methods to form structures capable of overcoming the negative impacts.
