Efficiency of Mechanical Felling and Processing in Soft and Hardwood Broadleaved Stands – Part 4: Environmental Suitability of Mechanical Felling in Natural Stands     pdf     HR     EN 655
Summary: This paper shows the consequences of mechanical felling and processing in thinning mixed natural stand consisting of Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea Matt.), European Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) by one-grip harvester Timberjack 1270B. Research of mechanical felling and processing consequences has pointed out tree damages and changes of some physical soil properties under compaction after single harvester pass.Research of standing tree damages by Timberjack 1270B harvester was carried out in 80 years old stand, with the growing stock of 323 m3/ha and the basal area of 24.4 m2/ha with 449 trees per ha. Removal of thinning was 36.2 m3/ha (50 trees per ha). There were no parallel skid trails typical for the harvester operations in the cutblock neither the tree marking for this purpose was done. Therefore, the harvester moved to the marked trees across the cutblock. The research established stand damage through the analysis of structural features of sustained damages. Operations and routines which are causing damage were identified and the assessment of the harvester performance in mechanized felling and processing of timber in the stand, considering the volume and structure of caused damage was made. During felling and processing operations performed by harvester, a total of 29.5 trees/ha were damaged, which is 6.4 % in relation to the number of the remaining trees after felling. 18.6 standing trees per ha were damaged and 10.9 non-marked trees per ha were felled due to breakage, overturning or harvester moving.
Changes of some physical soil properties under compaction after single harvester pass in relation on undisturbed soil, were researched by measuring cone index with cone penetrometer, shear strenght with vane tester and by laboratory analysis of water-physical properties of soil samples (Kopecky cylinder).
Results of the soil features which indicate compaction were tested and no significant differences were established for any of the tracked parameters.

Key words: thinning of hard-broadleaved stands; harvester; ree damages; soil disturbance
