Summary: Within its educational and scientific-research activities, the Forestry Faculty of the Zagreb University manages a part of the Mediterranean forests on the island of Rab. The management of the forests was taken over from the former Rab Commune Assembly in accordance with the contract No. 01/1-105/1-75, dated 6 March, 1975. The forests have a special purpose and a specific character ("forests with a special purpose", Forest Act NN No. 52/90). Their main use is to provide practical education for forestry students, to enable scientific- research work in terms of vegetative-ecological, biological, and particularly forestry- economic research connected to natural regeneration of forests in the Croatian part of the Mediterranean, and to offer optimal tourist-recreation and non-market valorisation of the forests on Rab. The wood mass obtained by silvicultural activities in the facility is sold as wood fuel to households on the island. In the past period, the forests were managed on the basis of annual plans. In order to manage and develop these forests adequately, a programme was drawn entitled "1986-1995 Forest Management Programme in the Teaching-Experimental Forestry Facility of the Forestry Faculty, Zagreb University", based on the then valid Regulations. The forests and forest facilities in the Teaching-experimental facility (NPŠO Rab) are located on the south-west coast of Rab, in the forested area of Kalifront. The St. Mare Bay is in the centre of the facility. The total forested area is 98.80 ha. Of this, - 90.00 ha are forested areas - 7.80 ha are bare and unproductive areas (forest roads, paths, and similar) -1.00 ha is a nursery The paper was presented at the international symposium "The 100th anniversary of scientific- research work by the Croatian agricultural and food production systems and forestry in the Mediterranean", Split, 12-14 October, 1994. The facility is divided into 8 compartments and 32 sections. The division was made on the basis of the origin, silvicultural form, age, vegetative diversity, and purpose (Map 1). At the request of the Forestry Faculty, the Rab Commune Assembly issued a permit 01/1181/ 1- 77 on 17 March 1997, granting the clearing of the forests in a 1-ha area for an experimental nursery. Horticultural and forest seedlings are produced here, and various experiments in the nursery and seed production are conducted. The nursery is called "The Andrija PetračićExperimental Nursery, Rab". A pre-fabricatedhouse (until recently used as a nursery worker´s flat) and a new water tank have been built near the nursery. Based on the Agreement No. 349-01/97-1848 of 25 March 1997, the Forestry Faculty of the University in Zagreb, in the capacity of the user, has agreed to take over the "Kalifront" hunting ground from the Public Enterprise "Croatian Forests", the holder of hunting rights. The said hunting ground is part of the Teaching-experimental facility in Rab, and will be used in a scientific-research programme. The hunting ground has an area of 1,351 ha. In cooperation with the hunting rights holder, the Forestry Faculty undertakes to draw up a revision of the hunting-management basis. The contracted parties agree that scientific-research activities by the Forestry Faculty in Zagreb in the hunting ground are effective from 1 April 1997, i.e., the beginning of the hunting season 1997/98, to the expiration of the hunting-management basis for the "Kalifront" hunting ground on 31 May 2005, or to the moment at which the holder of the hunting rights stops exerting his right to hunting in the said ground as stated in Article 15, Item 2 of the Hunting Act. The Faculty of Forestry of the University in Zagreb shall take over all game stock in the "Kalifront" hunting ground, all hunting-technical and hunting-management facilities, and all game feeding areas. The following game is present in the hunting ground: Common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) European hare (Lepus europaeus) Greek partridge (Alectoris graeca) Snipe (Scolopax rusticola) Stock dove (Columba oenas) Hog deer (Axis axis) Research in the "Kalifront" hunting ground is primarily aimed at establishing optimal relations between the factors of integral forest and game management in the sites of evergreen oak (Orno-Quercetum ilicis) and their degraded stages. Biological and economic feasibility of growing moufflons (Ovis ammon musimon), hog deers (Axis axis) and wild boars (Sus scrofa) in specially enclosed areas will be examined. The research will give answers to numerous questions of particular interest both for the study of biology of individual species, and for the problems of hunting management on the Adriatic islands in the context of broadereconomic activities (rational hunting management, hunting tourism, evaluation of the existing tourist offer, etc.). Scientific-research work will be significantly enhanced by the study of the influence of game on the forest ecosystem, of browsing and grazing on the vegetation, of game on the soil and on stand regeneration and growth. For the purpose of improved mating, some new hog deers (Axis axis) will be introduced into the hunting ground. Moufflon (Ovis ammon musimon) and possibly wild boar (Sus scrofa), at present not living in the hunting area, will also be introduced. Graduate and postgraduate forestry students from the Forestry Faculty in Zagreb will particularly benefit from field lectures, which will provide them with an opportunity to do practical work in the subject of hunting management. There is a Faculty building above St. Mare Bay converted from the former forester´s cabin built in 1895. In the course of 1976, the building was thoroughly renovated and slightly enlarged, and in 1994 and 1996, it was completely furnished. The building can accommodate 54 students, teachers and other staff members. There is a large water cistern next to the building, and a new water pool was added for students´ needs. The electricity is obtained from generating units. The second, third, and fourth-year students of the Forestry Faculty in Zagreb have their practical work in the facility. In the course of one school year, the students of each year spend 3 to 6 days at the facility. Foreign forestry students also pay visits here. Scientific work is conducted in experimental plots. A 1-ha permanent experimental plot (of a total of100 existing in the Republic of Croatia) was established here as part of the international project "Man and Biosphere" (UNESCO- MAB). Experts in various fields visit the plot in order to explore the nature. A large portion of scientific work is carried out in the nursery. The NPšO Rab is also frequently visited by various nature-scientific societies (the Croatian Ecological Society, the Croatian Biological Society, and others), as well as by foreign scientists and experts in the capacity of official guests of the Forestry Faculty in Zagreb. In the forest of the NPŠO Rab there are 13 experimental plots in all, where research is carried out. Scientific-research work on autochthonous climatological zonal association of evergreen oak and flowering ash (Orno-Quercetum ilicis H-ić 1958) is done in the degraded stages of evergreen oak forest growing in the NPSO Rab (and in the entire Kalifront area); in maquis, coppice forests, and coppice with standards found in some parts of the facility. The primary aim is to transform all degraded stages into a higher silvicultural form by applying proper silvicultural treatments. The final goal to which every forestry expert and grower should aspire is to achieve a regular forest of a high silvicultural form. In other words, a forest in which seed-grown evergreen oak (Quercus ilex) will dominate, with other species growing in the vertical profile of the understorey: strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) jasmine box or mock privet (Phillyrea media, P.latifolia), briar or heather (Erica arborea), laurustinus (Viburnum tinus), balsam tree (Pistacia lentiscus) and others.Research is being carried out into the indirect and direct conversion to one of the higher silvicultural forms. Apart from this, a structural research into the evergreen oak stands, as well as into the growth dynamics and coppice vigour are being done. By doing so, ecological requirements and biological properties of the species belonging to this phytocoenosis are being studied in depth. The detailed research has resulted in the phytocoenological and pedological map of the NPŠO Rab. This facility if the only of its kind on the Croatian coast. This is why the NPŠO Rab should be given much greater scientific importance as an ecological stationary station in this part of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. In any case, financial support should be requested from interested international institutions, the Zagreb University, the City of Rab and others for the purpose of defining and following research goals, the acquisition of instruments, the renovation and a possible enlargement of the facility. | ||
