| Optimal use of Stemwood in Forest Harvesting

Summary: An analysis of felled stemwood in the period 1989 - 1998 in the Forest Administration of Požega displays a constant fall in the production of assortments for mechanical and chemical processing. The overall amount of felled timber shows an increasing proportion of fuelwood manufactured under the so-called "do-it-yourself" system, while at the same time the demand for this product is decreasing due to the introduction of gas.What should forestry profession do in this situation? The paper points to deficiencies of the present practice. Some solutions have been made based on several methods of better (more rational) use of felled stemwood. The problems can be overcome with full co-operation of forestry experts - specialists: managers in prescribing annual cuts, commercial experts in market research, and technologists in forest administrations and offices.
