Yew (Taxus baccata L.), a rare species in the mountains of Požega     pdf     HR     EN 41
Summary: European yew grows in the Temperate Zone of the Northern Hemisphere. In the past, yew stretched over a continuous area. However, after the last glacial period, the continuity was broken and yew is now present in a discontinued area of the Temperate Zone of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, North America, Asia ).In the north-western mountains of Croatia, yew occurs in the forest association
Tilio-Taxetum Glavač 1959. In the mountains of Požega it is found in two small plots in the forest association Abieti-Fagetum pannonicum, in the forest region Točak, near Zvečevo.
At present, yew trees and shrubs are most frequently found in the form of garden plants in Croatian urban areas. Many yew varieties and cultivars are produced thanks to their biological and regenerative properties. The cultivars have differently variegated leaves (needles), colours and appearance.
Yew has always been a symbol of immortality. Yew leaves, bark, and seeds contain alkaloids, very strong poisons and drugs. The alkaloid taksin is used an important anti-cancerous drug.
The aim of this paper is to describe two yew habitats in the mountain of Papuk, situted in the Papuk Nature park. Yew habitats are marked in the enclosed map.

Key words: anti - cancerous drug; cultivars of yew; discontinued areal; european yew - tree; habitats of yew in mountain Papuk situated in Nature park Papuk; rarity in Požega mountains
