Osim obligatnih fitofaga, značajan broj neškodljivih vrsta hrani se tekućim sadržajem raznolikog izvora, poput organske tvari biljnog podrijetla (raspadajući plodovi, sjeme, nektar, mrtva zelena biljna tvar) i životinjskog podrijetla (uginuli kukci, kadaveri ostalih životinja). True bugs – common, yet poorly known insects with a plethora of feeding preferences. True bugs are insects familiar to everyone, if not otherwise, during the autumn and winter months when they enter our flats and homes in their search for safe overwintering sites. On the basis of their sucking type mouthparts we classify them as suckers, among which, small number of plant feeders can be considered as true pests, like sycamore and oak lace bugs (Corythuca ciliata /Say, 1832/ and C. arcuata /Say, 1832/). In addition to obligatory phytophages, significant number of harmless species feed on organic matter, both of plant (decaying fruits, seeds, nectar, dead plant remaining) and animal (dead insects, cadavers of other animals) origin. Part of true bugs live actively, predating on other insects. A good example is one of our predatory species from the family Reduviidae, Rhynocoris iracundus (Poda, 1761), which is characterized by its red- black coloration. This species is adapted for active insect hunting (front legs modified into “claspers”). From an ambush, they first grab and kill their victim by piercing and injection of venom. Soon afterwards they suck out the liquid content of their freshly killed prey. Other species shown on this page are common, yet harmless inhabitants of forests, forest clearings and flowery meadows.
