SUMMARY: In the period from 7th to 14th of September 2008, NFZ.forestnet
platform organized 4th Summer school in Le Tholy – Nancy, France, on
subject “Modelling forest community organization, functions and dynamics
for improving forest management”. NFZ.forestnet platform is a European network
for education and research in forestry and it represents an active international
cooperation of Nancy, Freiburg and Zürich, with the aim of
increasing scientific excellence and visibility and to attract scientists and
especially young researchers from all over Europe, thus contributing to the
creation and structure of the European Research Area. Participants were MSc
and PhD students in the field of forestry, from all over the world (France, England,
Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Croatia, Romania and Argentina).
Lecturers were from acknowledged European scientific institutions; FVA
(Freiburg), AgroParisTech-Engref (Nancy), IRD (Montpellier), CEA LSCE,
Cirad (Montpellier) and INRA (Nancy and Avignon). In total, there participated
26 students and 12 lecturers. One week of intensive courses enabled students
to master basics of modelling approach and to get an insight into
diverse application of modelling in the forestry. Day dedicated to the students’
presentations was great opportunity for interactive exchange of knowledge. At
the school end it was held a Table Ronde on topic “Modeling as tool for forest
management”. Aside from great importance of process-based models that give
detailed information and contribute to basic science in forestry and plant biology,
the emphasis was given on significance of robust mathematical equations
that are useful for stand modelling and applicable in foresters practice.
