Drvni ostaci, zaboravljeni i nikad izveženi suhari, stari i mahovinom obrasli panjevi, sve su to prikladna staništa za razvoj sekundarnih i tercijarnih kukaca ksilofaga i lignikolnih organizama koji drvnu materiju razgrađuju i vraćaju u osnovne biogene cikluse jednog šumskog ekosustava. Osim toga pružaju oni odlično zimsko sklonište mnogobrojnim predatorskim i parazitoidnim šumskim kukcima o kojima neposredno ovisi i stabilnost neke šume. Pretraživanjem takvih mjesta, u mahovini, ispod kore, u potpuno rastočenom drvu naići ćemo na brojne kornjaše iz porodica trčaka, strvinara, kusokrilaca i još neke manje poznate ali šumarskoj struci vrlo korisne grabežljive i parazitoidne kukce. Želja nam je da ovdje podsjetimo na činjenicu kako su naše šume iznimno bogate ovim tipom ekološke niše te su u smislu bioraznolikosti među najbogatijima u ovom dijelu Europe. Wood debris, forgotten and never taken out logs, old stumps overgrown with moss, all these are prime sites for secondary and tertiary xylophages and other wood decomposing organisms which cycle back the woody material into the main biogenic cycles of the forest ecosystem. Aside from that, they offer winter shelter to the myriads of predators and parasitoids that strongly influence the stability of forest populations. Checkout of the moss, underside of the loosened bark or the interior of powdery and fully decomposed old tree trunks reveals numerous species from the families of ground beetles, carrion beetles and rove beetles and also some less known but important beneficial groups in relation to forestry. It is our wish here also to bring out the fact that our forests abound with this type of ecological niche, and in comparison with the surrounding European countries, classify among the richest in terms of biodiversity.
