Razdoblje ranog proljeća, kada šuma još nije u potpunosti zastrla šumsko tlo i kada sve u prirodi buja i slavi povratak sunca i topline, obilježeno je nekim vrstama kukaca koje se prve javljaju probuđene iz razdoblja zimskog mirovanja. Među prvima, javljaju se dobro poznati leptiri žućaka (Gonepteryx rhamni L.), koji su zimu proveli mirujući u stadiju odraslog kukca ili imaga. Na šumskom tlu prekrivenom listincem i mahovini pridanaka među prvima nalazimo i smeđe, gusto-četkaste gusjenice ivanjske ptičice (Syntomis phegea L.), leptira čija će se prepoznatljiva crna imaga javiti tek početkom ljeta. Već kad šuma počne intenzivnije listati, na osunčanim malenim progalama zapažaju se rojevi malenih leptirića. Najčešća je vrsta Adela reaumurella L., vrsta metalno-zelenih krila čiji mužjaci imaju ticala nekoliko puta dulja od duljine tijela. Najlakše ih zapažamo dok lebde zrakom svoj svadbeni ples naizmjence se uspinjući i spuštajući ugrijani zrakama proljetnoga sunca. Early spring, while forest has not yet fully closed its crowns and shadowed forest floor, and when everything alive celebrates the return of sun and warmth, is the period characterized by some insect species awaken from their winter break. Among the earliest, well known Brimstones (Gonepteryx rhamni L.) flutter around after they endured winter in the adult stage. Crawling on the forest floor and last fall litter, caterpillars of Nine-spotted (Syntomis phegea L.) are commonly seen but rarely recognized compared with their black, white spotted adults, that appear in early summer. Later in the spring, in the forest openings and small sunny spots a swarms of small butterflies appear. The commonest species is Green longhorn moth (Adela reaumurella L.). Forewings of this species have beautiful metallic sheen and males have extremely long antennas. Most commonly they are observed while dancing in the sunny openings during their mating flight.
