SUMMARY: During the last century, Austrian pine (Tinus nigra Arnold)
was frequently used for afforestation of karst in Istria (Croatia). Austrian pine
was planted on various soil types to protect the soils from erosion and to restore
the forest vegetation. The research on pine plantation health status since
1992 has revealed localities with various dieback symptoms in the pine
crowns. In some of the researched localities significant dieback symptoms
were observed, from the dieback of various crown parts to the dieback of whole
trees. Significant differences in their health status were also observed according
to different soil types. Pathological research confirmed a significant
presence of the fungus Sphaeropsis sapinea (Fr.) Dyko et Sutton in the affected
pines. The fungus turned out to be an important factor negatively influencing
the stability of the A ustrian pine plantations in Istria.

The pathogenicity of´S. sapinea is expressed in trees predisposed by certain
stress factors, especially by drought and unfavourable site conditions. The
analysis of meteorological data for the region of Istria since the year 1990
shows significant annual differences in precipitation, and an increase in the
average monthly air temperature.

The research results reveal the differences in the presence of S. sapinea
and in its impact on the health status of Austrian pine plantations in various
sites in Istria. Site differences were confirmed by soil analyses and analyses of
plant material. The obtained results can be implemented in the selection of favourable
sites for future afforestation with pine species in the karst region for
the purpose of protecting the soil from erosion.
