IZLAGANJE NA ZNANSTVENOM SKUPU - PRESENTATION AT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM Šumarski list SUPLEMENT (2005), 202-218 UDK 630* 116 + 907.1 + 113 UTJECAJ BRDSKIH ŠUMSKIH EKOSUSTAVA NA KAKVOĆU VODE U VODOTOCIMA THE IMPACT OF MONTANE FOREST ECOSYSTEMS ON WATER QUALITY OF WATERCOURSES Ivica TIKVIĆ, Dinko PUNTARIĆ, Željko ZEČIĆ, Damir UGARKOVIĆ, Zvonko SELETKOVIĆ* SAŽETAK: Brdski šumski ekosustavi su prema površini najzastupljeniji u Hrvatskoj, te kao takvi imaju najveći utjecaj na kruženje vode, odnosno kakvoću površinskih i podzemnih voda. Taj utjecaj ovisi o ekološkim (reljef, matična podloga, tlo i klima) i biološkim čimbenicima (vrste drveća, struktura šumskog ekosustava i antropogeni utjecaji). I. Tikvić, D. Puntarić, Ž. PODRUČJE I METODE ISTRAŽIVANJA - Research area and methods U raduje istraživana kakvoća vode vodotoka na području Papuka, Nacionalnog parka Plitvička jezera i Velebita. PRESENTATION AT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM Šumarski list - SUPLEMENT (2005), 202-218 THE IMPACT OF MONTANE FOREST ECOSYSTEMS ON WATER QUALITY OF WATERCOURSES Ivica TIKVIĆ, Dinko PUNTARIĆ, Željko ZEČIĆ, Damir UGARKOVIĆ, Zvonko SELETKOVIĆ* SUMMARY: In terms of surface area, montane forest ecosystems are the most widely distributed ecosystems in Croatia. As such, they have the greatest impact on water cycle and the quality of surface and ground water. This impact depends on ecological (relief parent substrate, soil and climate) and biological factors (tree species, structure of forest ecosystem and anthropogenic impacts). No research has been made on the effects of particular tree species, soil types, different parent substrates and man on the quality of waters in the forest ecosystems in Croatia. The paper compares indicators of water quality in watercourses from several montane forest ecosystems in Croatia. Differences in water quality were analyzed with reference to site and stand conditions. The general ecological condition of water was determined on the basis of twelve samples from different watercourses in three localities (Papuk, Plitvice and Velebit). The analysis included physical-chemical water condition, nutrient content, metals, organic compounds, mineral oils and other indicators of water quality. No significant differences in physical-chemical indicators were found among the different forest ecosystems. Water quality in almost all the examined watercourses was very high. Compared to the watercourses in forest ecosystems, those in the vicinity of settlements had significantly higher concentrations of nutrients, aerobic bacteria and metals. No differences were found in water quality of the watercourses in the national parks in comparison with those in commercial forests. Variability of water quality indicators from the watercourses in different forest ecosystems indicates the complexity of the effects of forest ecosystems on water quality in watercourses. Compared to the watercourses outside forests, those in forest ecosystems manifested higher water quality regardless of management methods. Key words: water quality, montane forest ecosystems, national park, commercial forests INTRODUCTION With its relatively rich supply of water, Croatia tathe remaining 40 %. I- Tikvić, D. Puntarić.

Conclusions terija, ukupnih ulja i aluminija u usporedbi s vodo tocima u šumskim ekosustavima. 5. |

I. Tikvič. D. Puntarić. Ž. Zečić. D. Ugarković. Z. Seletković: TUF. IMPACT OF MONTANIi FOREST ... Šumarski list SUPLEMENT (2005). 202-218 ecosystems are considered the most stable hydro-geological ecosystems on Earth, which is corroborated by preserved soils in hilly and mountainous areas that sustain natural forests, and by clear and clean waters despite considerable aerial pollution and other adverse factors. Precipitation passing through the forest canopy (throughfall), leaf litter and forest soil is naturally purified and reaches underground layers in the form of drinking water. Trees and shrubs intercept precipitation and influence seepage, runoff and percolation (surface and ground runoff), soil erosion, filtering and purification (Tikvić and Seletković, 2003). This influence depends on the existing ecological and biological factors. The most important ecological factors are relief, parent substrate, soil and climate whereas biological factors include tree species, forest ecosystem structure and anthropogenic impacts. Springs, streams, underground and surface waters largely depend on the condition of the surrounding forest ecosystems. Natural or artificial changes in the condition of a forest ecosystem may cause changes in hydrological processes and chemism of watercourses (Bau ml er and Zech, 1999). According to Gallcr (1975; Starče vi ć, 2000), a forest may intercept and purify about 2,000 mJ of water per ha annually. Bearing in view the size of the forested area in Croatia, very large quantities of water are filtered by forest ecosystems annually. However, all ecosystems suffer from continuous and increasing pollution, which is reflected on water quality in forest ecosystems. Harmful effects of polluted air and rain on forest trees, soil, water and the human health have been confirmed by a number of researchers RESEARCH AREA The paper explores water quality of watercourses in the area of Papuk, the Plitvice Lakes National Park and Velebit. Samples in the area of Papuk were taken from the streams Brzaja and Dubočanka, and from the river Orljava. In the Plitvice Lakes National Park samples were provided by the streams Sušanj and Rječica, and in the area of Velebit from three springs and from the stream Tisovac. Table 1 gives the basic characteristics of the study area. Indicators of the general ecological water condition (physical-chemical indicators, oxygen regime, nutrients, microbiological and biological indicators), as well as the use of water (metals, organic compounds and radioactivity) were sampled and analyzed using the Croatian norms in the Institute of Public Health of the City of Zagreb. Physical-chemical indicators (pH and electrical (Fi lip an et al, 1996). Prpić et al. (1994) reported contamination of forests and agricultural areas with lead. According to these authors, forest soils are several times more polluted with lead than agricultural soils, which may be attributed to the structure of a forest and its role in water purification. However, B i n k e y et al. (1999) detected nitrate and phosphate concentrations in the watercourses of agricultural areas in the USA that exceeded those in forest watercourses by nine times. Despite increasing pollution in forests, waters in hilly and mountainous watercourses in Croatia have retained their purity and clarity, owing primarily to the positive effect of forest ecosystems. Hydrological processes in forests are also affected by forest management practices. Proper management with forests sustains the optimal condition of a forest ecosystem and ensures commercial and other forest functions. Management treatments have short-term negative effects on hydrological forest function, but this function is restored several years after thinning and selection cutting (Rosen et al., 1996, Bau ml er and Zech, 1999). According to Anders son et al. (2000), the problem of forest water quality is one of the vital priorities in forest ecosystem research. Yet, impacts of a particular tree species, soil type, different parent substrates and man on water quality in forest ecosystem watercourses still remain to be investigated. This paper analyzes waters in montane Croatia and assesses the impact of different forest ecosystems on the quality of water in watercourses. AND METHODS conductivity) and dissolved oxygen were determined with electrometric analysis, while chemical oxygen demand (COD) was determined with potassium permanganate titration. Nutrients (nitrates and nitrites) were determined spectrophotometrically, and metals were determined with the electrochemical method. Of organic compounds, mineral oils were determined with infrared spectroscopy, while phenols, lindane, polychlorinated byphenils (PCB) and DDT were determined with spectroscopy and gas chromatography. Microbiological indicators, or aerobic bacteria count, were determined by counting bacterial colonies growing on a nutritive medium at 22 °C and 37 °C. According to Water Classification Regulations (NN 77/98) and based on the allowed border values of individual indicators, waters were classified in different categories (I - V). RESEARCH GOAL The goal of research was to assess water quality of Another goal was to analyze differences in water qualiwatercourses in different forest ecosystems and exploty with regard to site and stand conditions and establish re the effects of forest ecosystems on water quality. differences in water quality of watercourses in and out |

RESULTS PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL INDICATORS OF WATER QUALITY IN WATERCOURSES Table 2 shows indicators of physical-chemical features of water from the watercourses in the area of Papuk, Plitvice Lakes and Velebit. With regard to pH values, water samples in all the localities belong to the first category (I), except in the locality of Papuk 1, where water bordered between the first and the second category (I and II) (Fig. 1). On average, the lowest pH values were found in the area of Papuk and the highest in the area of Plitvice Lakes. By localities, the highest differences in pH values of water were found in the watercourses of Papuk, and the smallest in the area of Plitvice Lakes (Tabic 2). Values of pH in the watercourses outside the forest ecosystems did not differ significan tly from those in the forests. No differences were found in the pH value of water between protected areas and commercial forests. Electrical conductivity values were the highest in the area of Plitvice Lakes. The majority of the watercourses were in the first (I) water category, except for the localities Plitvice 3 and 4, which were in the second (II) category. The localities Papuk 1 and 2 had significantly lower values of electrical conductivity than other localities. Higher electrical conductivity values were found in the protected area in relation to commercial forests, while no differences were found between the localities in and outside the forest. OXYGEN REGIME IN WATERCOUSES No differences were found between the localities in terms of dissolved oxygen values, oxygen saturation and chemical requirements of oxygen, except for the locality Papuk 2, which showed considerable aberration from these indicators in relation to other localities. In terms of dissolved oxygen, all watercourses contained the first-category water (I), except for the sample from the river Orljava (Papuk 2). Oxygen saturation in the area of Papuk was slightly lower and in Plit vice Lakes slightly higher, so three samples had water quality of the second category (II) (Fig. 2). Chemical oxygen consumption (COC) was similar in all the watercourses, except for the sample from the river Orljava, where COC values were 30 times higher than those in other Papuk localities (Table 2). Higher COC values indicate an increased content of hardly soluble organic matter in water. No oxygen regime indicators were measured in the area of Velebit. NUTRITIVE AND ORGANIC MATTER AND MICROBIOLOGICAL INDICATORS OF WATER QUALITY IN WATERCOURSES Nitrates are the only nutrients found in water samples from the watercourses. In terms of nitrate content, the majority of the watercourses belonged to the second category (II), except for the locality Velebit 1 and 3, whose waters were in the first category (I) (Table 3). No differences were found between the protected area and commercial forests, nor were they found between watercourses in and out of forests. The average proportion of aerobic bacteria was the lowest in Plitvice Lakes, slightly higher on Papuk and the highest on Velebit. All aerobic bacteria values were within the first-category water, except the river Orljava (Papuk 2), where the quantity of aerobic bacteria exceeded that in other watercourses by up to 250 times. No differences were found between the protected area and commercial forests, whereas a significantly higher quantity of aerobic bacteria was found in the watercourses outside the forests compared to those in the forests. The mineral oil content in the majority of the samples was within the limits of the first-category water. Only the samples from the Orljava (Papuk 2) and the stream Veliki Tisovac (Velebit 4) had water of the second category. Higher values of total oil quantities were found in the watercourses outside the forests in relation to those in the forests. Minimal values were found in the watercourses on Velebit and on Papuk (Fig. 4). No differences in the quantity of mineral oils and total oils were established between protected areas and commercial forests. DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES AND METALS IN THE WATERCOURSES OF MONTANE CROATIA In terms of cyanide content, water in the majority of the watercourses belonged to the second category (II). The least cyanide was registered in Plitvice Lakes, while the most was found on Velebit. Velebit also sho wed the highest differences between particular watercourses in the same area. In terms of cyanide content, higher cyanide concentrations were found in commercial forests compared to those in the protected area, |

Šumarski list - SUPLEMENT (2005). 202-218 while no differences were found between the localities in and out of the forest. In terms of fluoride, water in all the localities was of the first category. However, twice as high fluoride values were found on Papuk in relation to the values on Velebit (Table 4). No differences were found between the localities in the forest and out of the forest, and neither were there any differences between the protected area and commercial areas. Iron and manganese were not found in the watercourses of the Plitvice Lakes area, while extreme values of iron, aluminum, and manganese were detected in the river Orljava (Papuk 2). The quantities of metal in the area of Velebit were within the limits of the first and the second water category, while extreme aluminum concentrations were found in the localities outside forests (the stream of Tisovac and the river Orljava), which correspond to the third - fifth water category. Figure 5 shows cyanide values in the waters from the watercourses in the study area. Cyanide values in the localities Plitvice 1 and 2 responded to the first-category water, while the other localities had the second- category water in terms of cyanide content. DISCUSSION Surface water quality monitoring is regulated by a number of criteria and water classification systems. Water is usually classified into categories on the basis of quality. These categories determine its use for a particular purpose. Such a classification is based on com- Water quality in the Water quality has systematically been monitored in several measuring stations in Croatia since the 1960s. The year 2000 is considered the reference year for the description of the quality of surface waters in rivers, springs and lakes (S u r m a n o v i ć et al. 2003). According to the results of water quality assessments in watercourses, springs and lakes during 2000 and 2001, and according to oxygen regime, nutrients and biological indicators, waters in Croatia mostly fall in the second (II) and (III) category (good to moderately good quality), according to microbiological indicators in the third (III) and fourth (IV) category (moderately good to poor quality), but in about 10 % of the measuring stations in the fifth (V) category (poor quality). The quality of water in the karst area of Croatia is satisfactory due to low intensity management activities (M i 1 ković et al. 2003). Water quality in springs indicates not only the degree of quality in the spring itself but also the condition of water in the aquifer. Spring water must satisfy the first (I) category criteria. The biggest deviations from the planned 1st category were found in quality assessments of spring water in 2000 and 2001 due to increased microbiological indicator values. By the majority of other water quality indicators, most of the springs belong to the first (I) or the second (II) water category (M i 1 k o v i ć et al. 2003). Water condition in Croatia is satisfactory, except for some bigger deviations in water quality in the vicinity of larger urban or industrial centers, larger agricultural areas and major roads. The 2001 results of testing surface water in Croatia and groundwater in the City of Zagreb indicate, similarly to earlier years, certain deviations from planned water quality (Š i rac et al. 2003). Water quality in the majority of surface watercourses is parisons of physical, chemical, biological and microbiological indicators with prescribed border values for a particular water type (NN 77/98). Input of harmful and other substances in surface waters changes the quality of water and restricts its uses. Republic of Croatia impacted by unrecycled municipal and industrial was tewater, while the quality of groundwater is considered satisfactory. Water is polluted by agricultural activities and discharge of wastewater into watercourses. In Cro atia, only a very small portion of wastewater is recy cled. This is the reason that rivers in the Pannonian area of Croatia are generally one category below the desired quality. Pollution is mostly of bacterial origin (Milković etal. 2003). Table 5 shows water quality indicators of watercourses in montane forest ecosystems and compares them with data from the Croatian monitoring water quality network of 2000. The localities closest to the studied watercourses in montane forest ecosystems were used for comparison. According to Table 5, waters in the area of Velebit show the highest quality in terms of all indicators, although Glavač etal. (1985) report severe immission pollution of beech and beech-fir forests in the Dinaric range. Research by Prpić (1987), Martinović et al. (1988), Seletković (1990), Komlenović et al. (1991), Mayer (1989), Vrbek et al. (1991, 2002, 2004), and others confirms the above. Bearing in mind the large degree of forest cover in the area and high water quality, it can be concluded that forest ecosystems are natural water filters. Waters in Plitvice and Papuk are slightly polluted and do not transgress the second (II) water category. Measuring stations of the state monitoring network, situated as a rule in settlements, recorded pollution approaching values for the third (III) and fifth (V) water category (Hrvatske Vode, 2002). Therefore, the difference in water quality in settlements and in forest ecosystems is clearly noticeable. This research included three springs in the area of Ve |

In terms of physical-chemical indicators and oxygen regime, they belong to the first-category water. In terms of nutritive and organic matter, as well as microbiological indicators, the springs in Velebit belong to the first-category water, with the exception of the spring in the locality Velebit 2 (forest of common spruce), which belongs to the second- category water with regard to nitrate concentrations. In terms of fluoride, aluminum and iron concen- Water quality of watercourses Water acidity is predominantly due to carbon acid and organic and mineral acids. The pH of natural waters ranges approximately between 6 and 8. The range of pH values in the studied watercourses and springs was from 6.4 to 8.1. Electrical conductivity was proportional to the quantity of dissolved matter in water. Chemically clean water has low electrical conductivity, but it increases with an increase in dissolved mineral content. The highest average values of electrical conductivity were found in the watercourses in the area of Plitvice Lakes. In general, higher values of water electrical conductivity were recorded in forest ecosystems of protected areas (national park) than in water from commercial forests. No differences were found between the watercourses in and out of forests. Oxygen saturation is the consequence of the absence of microorganisms in water. Minimum oxygen saturation in the studied localities was 86 %, and minimum quantity of dissolved oxygen was 7.19 mg02/l. When these results are compared with the results of water analyses in the area of Croatia (Hrvatske Vode, 2002), water quality in forest ecosystem watercourses is significantly better than in the watercourses in urban areas. Of nutrients, only nitrates were found in considerable quantities. Nitrates are essential for the growth of algae and microorganisms. When nitrate values are low, the growth of these organisms is reduced, and the water is clear and clean. The absence of ammonia, nitrites and phosphorus indicates the absence of biological activity, growth of algae and phytoplankton, and eutrophication, which has a positive effect on the clarity of water in streams. The absence of nutrients in the studied watercourses is due to the immediate vicinity of springs, shade provided by tree crowns and lack of human impacts. Nitrate concentrations in the locality Velebit 4 (the stream Tisovac, agricultural and partially forested area) were two and a half times higher compared to the values in the localities Velebit 1 and 3 (the source of this stream in the forest of beech and fir). So trations (NN 78/98), the springs have water in the first category, with the exception of the spring Velebit 2, where water is in the second category owing to iron concentrations. With regard to the majority of water quality parameters (with the exception of cyanide), spring water in montane forest ecosystems belonged to the first category, which confirms the positive effect of forest ecosystems on water quality. in montane forest ecosystems mewhat higher nitrate values were recorded in the watercourses out of forests (the river Orljava and the stream Tisovac). According to B ink 1 ey et al.{\999), several times higher nitrate concentrations were recorded in the watercourses in agricultural areas in relation to those in forest areas. However, forest management may have an effect on water quality in montane watercourses. One part of the forest area was clearcut and the other part was left unaffected (control). There were increased concentrations of potassium (K+), ammonia ions (NH4T), nitrogen oxide (N03~), organic nitrogen and total nitrogen in forest watercourses where management treatments were applied, whereas changes in the concentration of calcium (Ca~+), magnesia (Mg"+), sodium (Na+), sulphate (S04~~) and chlorine (CI) were less distinct. The highest negative impact of clearcutting referred to leaching, mostly of nitrates and phosphates, into ground and surface waters. Despite the increasing use of pesticides in agriculture, no pesticides were found in the studied watercourses. The reason is extensive agricultural production in montane Croatia. Increased bacteria concentrations in the river Orljava indicate polluted waters outside forest ecosystems and in the vicinity of settlements and roads. Higher oil content was also recorded in the samples Papuk 2 and 4, as well as Velebit 4, which are all outside the forest. Metals were found in very low concentrations, with the exception of increased iron concentrations. The amount of iron in the river Orljava exceeded the allowed value by 160 times, which is attributed to the impact of the surrounding agricultural and urban areas. Aluminum was found in the largest number of samples, and the highest concentrations were recorded in the samples Papuk 2 and Velebit 4. Both localities are outside the forest and near human settlements and are affected by traffic and the adjacent agricultural areas. As for manganese, no values exceeding the allowed values for the first-category water were detected. It is necessary to physical, chemical and biological water features shouregister, map and protect significant water resources in Id be established within the state network (M i 1 k o v i ć these forests. Following this, organized monitoring of etal. 2003). Water quality protection measures The primary goal in planning water quality protection is to preserve the still clear waters (preserve the existing water quality) in springs, upper river courses in montane areas, and in underground waters (NN 107/95). The main purpose of these measures is to prevent or reduce the risk of pollution to springs or water pumps. The most important criterion in determining the boundaries of protected areas is the rate of pollution spread in the aquifer towards the water pump. Protective zones within passive protection programs prevent only bacteriological and conventional forms of pollution of drinking water (easily dissolved organic matter, ammonia, nitrites, etc.), but do not affect pollution with undissolved or hardly dissolved substances (nitrates, pesticides, organic dissolvents and heavy metals). Since forests are capable of absorbing heavy metals, especially in acid soils or soils with low organic matter contents, it is vitally important to retain them permanently around the sources in the capacity of natural water filters. The spatial plan program of the Republic of Croatia (NN 50/99) envisages sustainable management with water and water supply systems and places particular emphasis on the protection of source zones with the aim of preserving the current water quality. Such preservation refers to natural water protection, especially in source zones where forests may play a decisive role. CONCLUSIONS 1. Water from the watercourses in the area of Papuk was in the first quality category in terms of physical- chemical, microbiological and biological indicators, and in the second quality category in terms of nutrient content, with the exception of the river Orljava, whose water was in the III category. The detected harmful substances included cyanides and mineral oils in the quantities prescribed for the II water category. 2. Water from the watercourses in the area of Plitvice was also in the first category in terms of physical- chemical, microbiological and biological indicators, and in the second quality category in terms of oxygen regime and nutrient content. Water from the watercourses in the Plitvice Lakes National Park was of high quality. Harmful substances included cyanides in quantities prescribed for the first and second water category. 3. According to the majority of indicators, water quality in the watercourses from Velebit was in the first category. Harmful substances in the area of Velebit also included cyanides in quantities prescribed for the first and second water category. According to all the measured indicators, waters in the area of Velebit were of the best quality. 4. Water in the watercourses of different forest ecosystems was found to be of better quality. Watercourses outside forests had higher concentrations of aerobic bacteria, total oils and aluminum in comparison with watercourses in forest ecosystems. No significant differences were found by comparing the quality of water in commercial forests with that in protected areas. The only difference was the higher cyanide concentrations found in the watercourses in commercial forests. It can be concluded that forest management does not have an unfavourable effect on the quality of water in watercourses. Water quality in the study area is satisfactory. It is much better than the quality of water outside forests. Some major deviations in individual water quality indicators (nutritive matter and microbiological indicators) were found around larger urban centers and in agricultural areas (the river Orljava), and slightly less in the lake area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is attributed to the impacts of intensive tourism. Despite the high water quality of the watercourses in forest ecosystems, watercourses in the majority of the locations had higher cyanide values for the second category, which is the consequence of intensive air pollution. This also means that clear and clean water in the watercourses of montane forest ecosystems is not completely clean and suitable for drinking.
