A. Durbešić, 1. Milković: AFFORESTING UNSTOCKF.D FORESTLAND ON TI Ili SOUTHERN SLOPES Šumarski list - SUPLEMENT (2005), 133-143 3. REASONS FOR AMELIORATION There are two basic reasons for undertaking ameliorative operations in the study area: 1. The area is characterised by special geological features. In combination with the indented relief, these are responsible for the occurrence of torrents, gullies and ditches that flow into the Muć valley and bring material which covers the fertile soil and the roads. According to the estimate contained in the "Complex Amelioration Plan of Muć Municipality", damage inflicted by these torrents was exceptionally high and amounted to 20,000,000 dinars annually, or about 66 thousand dollars. 2. The geological substrate of the study area enables faster soil formation. Compared with typical karst soils on limestone substrates, fresher soils of better quality were developed in the area. Their amelioration achieves better productivity than in the surrounding areas. 4. AMELIORATION GOAL According to the "Complex Amelioration Plan of Muć Municipality", the immediate goal of ameliorating degraded areas in the study site is to protect soil against erosions. Another goal involves fodder production. At the time of the Plan, agriculture accounted for 95% of the national income in Muć Municipality, with the majority (57 %) realized through livestock industry. Since there were only 11 % of arable agricultural areas in the Municipality, the livestock fodder base was made up only of degraded bare karst and thickets. 5. STRUCTURE OF FOREST AREAS IN I960 The structure of forest areas at the time of the "Complex Amelioration Plan of Muć Municipality" was determined by vectorizing the vegetation map, a component part of the said plan, on a scale 1 : 25,000. According to the data provided by the Split Forest Office listed in the "Complex Amelioration Plan of Muć Municipality", the growing stock in the study area amounted to about 9,000 m3 (black pine), while the average annual increment per hectare was about 0.7 m3. 6. AMELIORATION PLAN The following amelioration and silvicultural mea sures were envisaged by the amelioration plan: 1. Bare karst afforestation productive-protective 126 ha; - anti-erosion 77 ha; establishing windthrow belts 36 ha; 2. Bare karst amelioration planting fodder shrubs 447.70 ha; planting fodder and forest species 271.0 ha; regenerating the grass cover and planting groups of trees 67.40 ha; 3. Conifer planting in thickets 51.60 ha; 4. Controlling and limiting grazing; 5. Application of regular silvicultural treatments in black pine cultures (repair planting, thinning). 7. DATA ON THE ACTIVITIES ACCOMPLISHED IN THE PERIOD 1960 1993 According to the management data referring to the past period referred to in the Management Plan for the management unit "Borovača" (valid in the period 1994 - 2003), the following activities were undertaken in the management unit "Borovača" in the period 1975-1993: - afforestation 421.50 ha; cleaning 35.52 ha; construction of fire lines 22.74 ha; maintenance of fire lines 27.83 ha. No data on earlier activities are available. 8. STRUCTURE OF FORESTED AREAS IN 1993 The observed area comprises 35 compartments and 1994 - 2003, of the total 1,293.76 ha, forested areas ac128 subcompartments of the management unit "Borocounted for 898.06 ha (69.41 %) and bare karst acvača". According to the management plans valid from counted for 395.70 ha (30.59 %). |
