S. Perić. V. Topic. Ž. Orešković. R. Maradin: BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OK EXCAVATIONS AND DUMPS ... Šumarski list SUPLEMENT (2005), 120-132
A 60 cm-80 cm-layer of earth taken from the
Rovanjska earth dump will be applied upon the levelled
area (Photo 4). Forest trees and shrubwood will be
planted over these plateaus between the two dumps in
an area of 13,000 m , i.e. 1.3 ha (0.6 ha earth dump

+ 0.7 ha waste dump).
The seedlings considered for this biological amelioration
are all above-listed tree and shrub species. The
planting distance of 2 m x 2 m in rows for both trees
and shrubs will be applied. The seedlings will be planted
in triangles (Figure 3).

Planting of brush climbers on the slopes of the waste
dump and earth dump of Rovanjska

Climbers are recommended for covering the steep nish broom (Spartium junceum); shrubby germander
dump slopes that descend toward the highway, in order (Teucrium fruticans); cotoneaster {Cotoneaser horito
stabilise the cliffs. The planting distance should be 1 zontalis), and others. The planting distance of the
x 1 (Figure 3). brushwood and semi-brush should be 1 x 1 m.

Dense planting of the following brush species is
proposed for the slopes of the waste/earth dumps: Spa

Planting of tree and brushwood species on the
earth/waste dump plateaus of "Posedarje"

The dumpsite (Photo 6) located close to the highway
(stationed at about 8+000) should be cleaned from the
remnants of the building material (concrete blocks,
rocks, etc.), in order to partly fill the surface mine. This
is followed by filling and levelling the surface with
earth and marly material from the dump. Then, same as

in case of the Rovanjska location, a 60 cm-80 cm layer
of quality soil should be applied over the area (Photo 5).

Forest trees and brushwood will be planted at a same
distance as in the Rovanjska location over this
15,000 m2 (1.5 ha)-large plateau. (Figure 3).

Planting of brush climbers on the slopes of the waste
dump and earth dump of "Posedarje"

The steep slopes of the earth dump should be alleviated
at a proportion of 1 : 1, so that the slopes could be
ameliorated biologically.

The 10,000 m2 - area will be covered by mainly
dense planting of theabove-listed brushwood species:
Spanish broom (Spartium junceum); shrubby germander
(Teucrium fruticans); cotoneaster (Cotoneaser horizontal),
and others.

The planting distance should be 1 x 1 m. The dumpsite
is covered by vigorous undergrowth with the highest
proportion (80 %) of white rosebay (Epilobium
angustifolium L.) (Photo 7). Grass is therefore not necessary
on this site.

CONCLUSION

The following can be concluded on the basis of the

research results:
Before any amelioration work can begin, the area
should be investigated and the terrain surveyed;
Soil samples should be taken and the pedological
analysis made;

-
Phytocenological survey;
-
Terrain preparation and sufficient quantity of quality
soil should be applied;
The area should be afforested with adequate species
for each habitat;
In afforestation corresponding quantity of seedling
material should be applied;
The afforestation should proceed according to the
principles of forestry science, and considering the
ecological requirements and biological properties
of each species related to the habitat conditions;
Planting should proceed timely and in corresponding
ways;
The earth/waste dump sites should be planted with
the seedlings with coated roots;
Timely and proper tending should be carried out regularly
after the afforestation.
