Besides careful soil preparation, quality seedling
material and expert knowledge, successful afforestation
requires proper tending of young cultures. In the
first place, watering should be carried out regularly during
critical times of the year, i.e. mainly in June, July
and August. However, April and May might be also cri-

RESULTS AND

Pedological

In the process of ameliorating the dumpsites, the
basic precondition is to apply sufficient quantities of
topsoil, which will later cover the formed marly plateaus
and the whole area after the exploitation.

In August of 2005 soil samples were taken from Rovanjska
and Posedarje dumps. The samples were analysed
(Table 3) by standard laboratory methods (AOAC
1996, PCC 1998).

The analysis of the soil samples revealed very strong
alkaline reactions with many total and active carbona

tical months in certain years. Watering should be carried
out whenever the skilled supervising person decides.
In addition to watering, other tending measures
should be carried out as well for the duration of at least
two years.

tes. The soils contain low proportions of humus and nitrogen
(<0.06 %N), and are also poorly or avcragely supplied
with phosphorus and potassium. (P205, K2).

It is therefore recommended that 50 % of quality
soil is added while planting the seedlings into holes;
close to the root ball, about two litres of compost should
be added to each seedling as a moisturising agent
(Stocksorb, or similar). In the second vegetation after
the planting, fertilising with complex nutrients should
be carried out according to the assessed needs.

Plant species suitable for afforestation

The earth dumps of Rovanjska and Posedarje are
located in the sub-Mediterranean vegetation zone of
pubescent oak and white hornbeam (Querco-Carpinetum
orientalis). The original climato-genetic vegetation
of this area has considerable changed, so that great
areas are in different degraded stages. The main tree
species are juniper, stone lime-tree, black ash, white
hornbeam, Montpelier maple, Christ´s thorn, Aleppo
pine, and cypress. All these species surround the present
dump areas, but were once growing on them. They
could, therefore, be the right species to be planted on
the research areas, after the ameliorating operations have
been completed. The proportions of the individual
species should be considered. A mixed stand of conifers
and broadleavcs should be selected for higher resistance,
quality and stability, in the following proportions:
Aleppo pine (50 %); pubescent oak, black ash,
and white hornbeam (30 %), and other mentioned species
(20 %). The choice is reduced to the following
fast-growing and decorative species with very modest
requirements from the habitat:
