PRESENTATION AT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM Šumarski list -SUPLEMENT (2005), 120-132 BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF EXCAVATIONS AND DUMPS DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAYS IN CROATIA Sanja PERIĆ, Vlado TOPIC, Željko OREŠKOVIĆ, Romana MARADIN* SUMMARY: This paper focuses on the subject of biological control of excavations and dumps on the Maslenica-Zadar highway section. During the last few years, great attention has been paid to the landscape planning of highway routes. However, their construction is closely connected to the degradation of the ecosystems they are passing through. From the ecological point of view, the building of highways is an extremely significant issue. In choosing the highway location, great attention is paid to the preservation of the environment. In spite of this, the landscape is undergoing changes, so that its original ecological and aesthetic functions must be restored. The exploration was conducted on two locations, Rovanjska (around 300 m south from the town of Rovanjska, and the channel Velebitski Kanal underneath the Velebit mountain) and the town of Posedarje, close to the Split-Zagreb highway, on its southern side. The area with surface mines and building material dumps is of typical karst morphology. During heavier rainfalls, runoffs and erosion processes can be seen. Close to the landfill is the Novigradsku More bay. This paper discusses the natural characteristics of the area explored, i.e. the geological, hydrological, climatic and vegetative characteristics. The basic principles of the biological cleanup are analysed. Presenting a list of forest trees, bushes, shrubs, and climbers, which could be used in the process of biological control, the authors analyse the planting methods in various locations. A schematic presentation of afforestation is made for both locations. The aim of the study is to use afforestation as an ameliorating method of environmental protection, in order to prevent erosion and enhance the visual value of the landscape. Key words: biological control, highway, seedling types, planting method, afforestation, and erosion.
