V. Ivančević: BIOLOGICAL AND TECHNICAL REGULATION OF THE SENJ TORRENT "TORRENTE" Šumarski list SUPLLMENT (2005), 91-109 cultures - enclosures of black pine were established over 320 ha in a mosaic-like pattern, 20 km of drywall were built and different silvicultural activities were applied. Technical works included 62 different torrential facilities, among which seven massive transversal barriers deserve special mention. Extensive land and construction work was also done. The Senj torrent and the numerous erosive processes in Senjska Draga were completely regulated with the biological-technical operations. These operations also allowed the return of the autochthonous vegetation. The current forests have a primarilyprotective role, combined with a multitude of other non-commercial functions. The establishment of young cultures - enclosures and the renewal of autochthonous vegetation in Senjska Draga gradually increased the water capaci ty and the number of springs supplying the Town of Senj with drinking water. Before being connected to the new water supply system in 1964, the former old water system in Senjska Draga used 25 springs with minimal annual capacity of 289,080 mi annually. It is currently mainly out of function, but the water could again be used for commercial purposes and for renewing the former torrential course. A legal procedure should be undertaken to include a number of biological-technical achievements in the monuments of technical culture _ According to the unanimous opinion of home and foreign forestry experts, the successful biological- technical operations in Senjska Draga may be ranked among the greatest achievements of the green profession in the whole Mediterranean area. |
