ing the possibility of converting the stand form by natural regeneration and
recommending a suitable regeneration method.

The experiment was established in three sample plots: in an unthinned
stand, in a thinned stand and over a bare regeneration area. The structure of
old Black pine stands was analysed, as well as the species, quantity, age,
heights and quantitative properties of natural young growth.

It was found that old forest cultures of Black pine in the studied localities
of Senjska Draga have all the characteristics of a transitional forest. The
analyses of natural young growth indicate the possibility of converting the
transitional into the final forest (climatogenous forest) of pubescent oak with
manna ash and hornbeam. Thinning of old black pine monocultures results in
two-storey stands with mature trees of black pine in the upper storey and an
undergrowth of deciduous species in the lower storey. The bare regeneration
areaon the one hand and a thick crown cover of unthinned stand of black pine
on the other, hinder the regeneration of pubescent oak. Stand form conversion
by natural regeneration in the studied sites can be accomplished by applying
shelterwood cutting over small areas.

Key words: Black pine (Tinus nigra Arn.), karst afforestation, natural
regeneration, transitional forest, conversion, biodiversity
