M. Šporčić. A. Saho: OZLJEĐIVANJE RADNIKA U HRVATSKOM ŠUMARSTVU TIJEKOM RAZDOBLJA ...
On the basis of the analyzed documents, it has been established that since
the foundation of "Hrvatske šume" (1991) about 6800 injuries at work have
occurred or 600 injuries each year. Business year with no incidence of fatalities
are an exemption rather than a rule. In fact three deaths occur annually
on the average. A conspicuous loss of working capacity is illustrated by the
data that approximately 700 employees are disabled workers. This figure
should be increased by a considerable number of disabled war veterans and
workers with limited working capacity.

A series of interesting data have been obtained by a detailed analysis of
injuries. Here are some of them:

Directly involved workers get injured in 82 % of cases. The number of
injuries per a thousand of employees, in the analyzed period, ranged between
min. 37 (in 2000) and max. 53 (in 1998). If only directly involved workers are
considered the values are much higher. They reach up to 156 injuries per a
thousand of productive workers (1997). On the average, each year 8,5 % of
directly involved workers get injured or every 12th worker.

The accidents are most frequent on Mondays (24,1 %) and in early working
hours (44 % of injuries occur until 10 o´clock). As much as 65 % of all
injuries were caused because the basic rules of protection at work were not
implemented. Machines for forest harvesting and wood processing are the
most significant source of injuries with a share of 15,1 %.

Workers aged between 41 and 45 suffered the highest number of injuries
(20 %) in the area of Delnice Forest Administration. This unusual situation
can be partly explained by insufficient workers´ awareness of the sudden
decrease of their vitality and work capacity regularly appearing with forest
workers after their forties.

Legs are usually the first to be hurt. They are injured in 40,4 % of cases.
Speaking of leg injuries, the most frequent are the injuries of the lower leg
(36,4 %) and then the injuries of the knee (16 %). The most frequent injuries
on the arms are those of fingers (29,7 %), on the head the eyes (38 %) and on
the body the chest (55,4 %). Injuries are mostly made of different cuts and
wounds caused by squashing (36,5 %). Sprains and strains are also significant
as well as contusions and squashes with the share of 17,3 %and 15,6 %,
respectively.

Negative indicators of safety and protection of workers established in
their work lead us to believe that people, their progress, motivation and satisfaction
are not recognized as the basic tool for achieving organizational success,
vitality and development of the enterprise. It is beyond question that the
knowledge, skill, creative and development potentials of our workers cannot
be revealed unless the basic conditions of their health and life protection are
met. In this respect, a comprehensive care of the safety and health of workers
should not only be the entrepreneur interest of the enterprise "Hrvatske
šume " but also of a wider social environment.
