M. Idžojtić & / . Ivanović: /HNK U HRVATSKOM ŠUMARSTVU Šumarski list br. 1-2, CXXVI (2002), 23-28 Željka Ivanović1 Marilena Idžojtić2 Republic of Croatia, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry 2 University of Zagreb, jfipBft Faculty of Forestry ft Students At the Forestry Department of the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb in the academic year 2000/2001 there were 602 enrolled students, of which 24.1 % were female. Unemployed In February 2001 there were 102 unemployed forestry engineers in Croatia, of which 21.6 % were female. ´Urnwcin Having 0.51 hectare of forest per capita, Croatia may be considered a European country with significant forest area. Forests ae primarily owned by the State (82 %). State-owned forests and forest land are managed by the state enterprise "Croatian Forests" Inc., Zagreb. To explore the situation of women in the forestry sector, a research was carried out in three institutions: University of Zagre b. Faculty of Forestry; Forest Research Institute, JastrebarsKo and "Croatian Forests" Inc., Zagreb. For these institutions the psentage of employed qualified women (i.e. forestry engineers, Masters of Science and Doctors of Science in forestry) in 2000, their age structure and posts were established. The questionnaire showed the status, obstacles and opportunities of women in Croatian forestry as well as their participation in decision making. Key words: Croatia, women, forestry. JniroduoiJOL Forests and forest land cover 43.5 % of the state territory in Croatia. 84 % of forest land is covered with forest vegetation, while the rest is comprised of different classes of non-covered land. A significant part of forest area is located in the karstregion (42 %). Main institutions which work on the conservation and development of forests in Croatia are the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, the University of Zagreb - Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Reswch University of Zagreb - Faculty of Forestry The Faculty of Forestry at the University of Zagreb is so far the only institution providing forestry education and training for graduate and postgraduate studies The curriculum and research are conducted in the Forestry Department and Wood Technology Department. Forest Research Institute. Jastrebarsko The Forest Research Institute came into being through the merger of the Institute for Forest Research in Zagreb, the Institute for Seed Husbandry in Rijeka and the Institute for Conifer Tree Species in Jastrebarsko. It consists of 5 scientific departments and is the only such institute in Croatia. State Enterprise "Croatian Forests" Inc., Zagreb State-owned forests and forest land are managed by the state enterprise "Croatian Forests" Inc. Zagreb. Its main objectives are the sustainable management and preservation of natural structures and diversity of forests. The enterprise consists of headquarters, 16 regional forest administration offices and 171 forest stations The Government of the Republic of Croatia appoints the director general, following the proposal of the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. The enterprise employs 10,000 people and is currently undergoing a process of restructuring. Methodology ;: A research was carried out by means of an anonimous questionnaire on 157 female employees, who work as forestry engeeners, M.Sc. or Ph.D.´s in forestry at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Forestry (Forestry Department), the Forest Research Inatite, Jastrebarsko and the State Enterprise "Croatian Forests" Inc., Zagreb. An analysis was made of the jobs they obtained, currer0osts, acquisition of additional qualifications, competitors, their family situation and opportunities in Croatian forestry. The questionnaire contained 6 general questions and 24 statements to be answered with Yes No, I don´t know. The results of the research are presented jointly for all the three institutions. FiBsutii The questionnaire was answered by 157 of 200 asked women (78.5 %). The general data include age. marital status and number of children. Most of the employed women, 65.0 %, are between 31 and 40 years old. 61.8 % are married, 31.2 % are single. The largest percent of women does not have children (37.0 %), 29.9 % have two children, and 22.3 % have one child. 81.5 % of women are satisfied to have chosen forestry as their profession, which is very positive. How many women there are in lead positions in Croatian forestry is answered by the fact that 92.4 % of women have a man as their immediate superior, and th e opinion of the women that there is not a proportionate number of women in lead positions (88.5 %). Only 3.8 % have improved their professional knowledge abroad, and the same percentage is actively engaged in the cooperation with international forestry institutions. 64.3 % of the women stated that they want to achieve a higher position at work. 13.4 % of women stated that their family was an obstacle for their career advance and 10.8 % that their career advance was inhibited by their immediate superior. It is interesting that 70.5 % of women stated that they would achieve a career much sooner if they were man. Most of the women (83.3 %) have no communication problems with forest workers, 69.4 % do not work less on the field than their male colleagues, and 81.5 % do not like office work more than field work. 83.9 % of women stated that forestry should not remain a profession reserved primarily for man. Concluojof] In Croatia forestry has been and still is a line of business dominated by men. Women experience that it is very difficult for them to reach higher positions and participate in decision making. However, the results of this research also showed that women who wor k as forestry engineers. Masters of Science and Doctors of Science in the forestry field have found self-realisation. Prilog 1. SUMMARY: A research about the presence of women in Croatian forestry was carried out on a sample of 200 women (B.Sc, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in forestry, biotechnological sciences, field of forestry) employed at the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Zagreb (Forestry Department), the Forest Research Institute Jastrebarsko and the State Enterprise "Croatian Forests" Inc. Zagreb. An anonymous survey, in which 79 % of the respondents took part, was applied. At the Forestry Department of the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Zagreb 7 % of the employees are women, at the Forest Research Institute Jastrebarsko there are 23 % and at the State Enterprise "Croatian Forests " Inc. Zagreb there are 17 % of women. The majority of women in the survey (85 %) doesn´t stem from families traditionally engaged in forestry. 65 % of the respondents graduated on time, and every fourth graduate continued to study at post-graduate studies. The survey results show that 82 % of women are satisfied to have chosen forestry as their life profession, despite the fact that 89 % of them consider that they are not proportionally represented in managing positions in Croatian forestry.
