SUMMARY: The article discusses coating as one of the important alternatives
in the pre-sowing preparation of forest tree seeds. The results obtained
so far on seed germination and fürther seedling growth are assessed. The
need to select good quality coating mixtures is stressed. The results of the tests
obtained by the author in Slovakia since 1985 are given. According to the latest
results, the best coating mixture for the coating of seeds of spruce, pine,
mountain pine and white alder is made of beech sawdust and fungicide and
insecticide additives, while organic glue is used as a binder. On average, the
seeds coated with this mixture had equal germination as non-coated seeds,
but the seedlings showed better vitality and 10%- better height and diameter
on average. Coating proved to be particularly positive with alder seedlings.
Further advantages of coating include uniform dimensions of small seeds and
simpler sowing. The optimal sowing method included gluing seeds onto
water-soluble paper bands at distances of 4 to 5 cm.
