Summary: Data on the first finding of plant viruses in soil and water of some forest ecosystems in Croatia are presented. In soil samples of three forest districts in central Croatia tobacco necrosis virus has been found. Also, in water samples of the three districts tobacco mosaic virus and tomato mosaic virus, respectively, have been revealed. At the same time in this article the results of past investigations on virus infections of forest and ornamental woody plants in Croatia are reviewed. In 19 genera of forest and ornamental trees and shrubs plant viruses have been found. The most frequent viruses of forest and ornamental woody plants in Croatia are cucumber mosaic virus, cherry leaf roll virus and some of rhabdoviruses. So far nobody has investigated viruses of forest ecosystems in Croatia systematically. The article suggests that Croatian forest phytopathologists should begin to investigate more then till now viruses of forest ecosystems because research of the nowadays occurring of forest decline is incomplete without a good knowledge of virus role in it. |
