opskrba vodom, zaustavljanje i sprečavanje erozije, zaštita životinjskog
svijeta, rekreacija stanovništva i si. Učinkovito gospodarenje zahtijeva
vjerodostojne informacije za kartiranje šumskih površina, inventuru drvne
zalihe, ustanovljavanje oštećenosti i bolesti šuma i mnoge druge. Prikupljanje
tih informacija može se racionalizirati i pojeftiniti primjenom fotointerpretacije
i ostalih metoda daljinskih istraživanja.

Jedan od ravnopravnih izvora informacija su i snimke snimljene iz
Svemira s umjetnih zemljinih satelita. Postoje primjeri i operacionalizirane
metode njihove primjene za rješavanje mnogih problema u šumskom gospodarstvu.
Snimke iz Svemira trebaju postati integralni sastavni dio budućeg
geografskog informacijskog sustava (GlS-a) Republike Hrvatske. U primjeni
satelitskih snimki u znanstvenim istraživanjima i praktičnoj primjeni
zaostajemo za svijetom oko dvije dekade. To zaostajanje bi naporom
cijele zajednice trebalo što prije nadoknaditi.
