Systems of Evaluating Fire Hazards — A View of the Future Summary Prognoses of the occurrence and behaviour of wild forest fires will be of grat use to fire management authorities dealing with the problems of prevention of forest fires by predicting when fires may occur, intentionally burning, and thus reducing, dangerous fuels as a means of preventing forest fires, controlling and protecting the natural environment from products found in smoke, etc. A survey of the role meteorology will play in fire management over the next 20 years is a survey of science and of the success of fire management and only partially a survey of what science and the technology of atmospheric science will be able to provide to meet the needs of fire management. Future improvements of the meteorological prognoses used in fire management will arise from improvements in three areas: surveillance sysetms, prognosis techniques and subsequent prognosis processing, and the better integration of this information into the fire management process.
