The Use of Degraded Forest Areas in Karstic Regions Tor the Purposes
of Cattle-Rearing

S u m mary

Degraded forest areas in the littoral part of the karstic region represent a
tremendous land potential. Only a part of those areas are going to be reclaimed
!or the economically feasible production of timber in the foreseeable future, while
the larger remaining part will be fit only for the needs of breeding livestock. This
exploitation must, however, be carried out in accordance with the new and up
to date method that will not only retain the existing forest reserves, but will
also improve llieni. Such conditions can be ensured only by the forestry authorities

n whose hands the management of those areas has been entrusted.

The initial research conducted by the authors of this paper indicates the
degree to which degraded forest areas are significant as a source of cattle food:
leaves of the tested types of trees and bushes are 30 to 50Vo more nutritious
than good-quality meadow hay; the yield of dry leaf in the tested types of degraded
forests is 15 to 30 q. per ha, which corresponds to the nutritional value of
about 20 to 40 q. of goodquality hay; the yields of grass on karstic grazing areas
can be increased by 4 to 11 times through a simple ban on grazing for the period
of a few years.
