Early Insect Pests and Their Significance in Foreset Protection

Summary

In forest protection the term »early insect pest« usually denotes that insect
species which appears early in the spring damaging trees before the foliage is
unfolded. On broad-leaved trees they feed upon flower and leaf buds, flowers and
young leaves. To this group belong some of the most important defoliators of forest
trees in this country: ash weevil, oak sawfly, brown-tail moth, oak leafrollers,
winter moths etc. (table 1).

Specific bioecological properties of individual species stand in the way of successful
chemical control of early insect pests, particularly on large areas by means
of aircraft.
