Inter — and Intrapopulation Variability of some Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa L.
Gaertn.) Provenances in Biomass Production and Nutirent Accumulation

Summary

Plants of black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.) 2 + 1 years of age, belonging
to three provenances: France, Podravina (Yugoslavia) and Posavina (Yugoslavia)
have been culivated in nursery conditions. French provenance contained
7 half — sibs from plus trees from natural population, Podravina provenance
6 half — sibs from clonal seed orchard and one treatment which represented
plants coultivated from seed miture of clones from clonal seed orchard,
while Posavina provenance contained 12 half — sibs, also from seed orchard.
The experiment was laid out as rondomized bloch whit different number of replications
(1—4) with 4 seedlings per plot.

Growth, biomass production of aboveground and underground plant organs,
nutrient in different plant organs and nodules were analyzed. Analyses were made
on the basis samples of 4 half — sibs chosen at random of three provenances
in four replications. On the basis of the obtained results the following can be
concluded:

1.
Genotypic differences in biomass production between the investigated provenances
were found. French provenance exibited the greatest production,
then Podravina provenance (river Drava) and the poorest Posavina provenance
(river Sava).
2.
The obtained differences in biomass production between half — sibs progenies
of the same provenance point to the strongly emphasized interpopulation
variability, i.e. different general cobining ability for biomass production,
which gives good guarantees for improving of this characteristics by
establishing improved clonal seed orchards.
3.
The correlation between nodule dry matter and total quantity of plant
dry matter is very strong (r = 0,80).
4.
Regarding particular plant organs, the highest nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
and calcium concentrations were established in leaves. Concentrations
of iron and manganeze were extremely high in nodules. Together with
