Synecological — Silvicultural Investigations in the Forests of the Island of Rab

Summary

In the Kalifront forest on the island of Rab (at 44° 45´ north latitude and
14° 45´ east longitude from Greenwich) the Department of Silvicultural Studies
within the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb, started an investigation into
the influence of silvicultural works in Evergreen Oak stands (Quercus ilex L.). For
this purpose experimental plots were laid out in maquis, coppice forest and coppice
with standards forest. The introductory part presents geological, pedological and
climatic conditions of the island of Rab, together with vegetation, followed by data
on forest structure in the experimental plots according to number of stems and tree
species. Data are given for the condition initially found and the condition after
the first thinning. The original condition is marked with an »O« and the state after
felling with an »S«.

Tables 1 — 8 contain the following data:

— for plots in maquis with slight thinning (Table 1), with heavy thinning and
acorn planting (Table 2) and the control plots (Table 3);
— for plots in the coppice with standards forest, which were thinned (Tables 4 and
5) and for the control plot (Table 6);
— for plots in the coppice forest data are given only on the original state (Tables 7
and 8).
