Taxation of Forests for the »Mljet« National Park
from 1875 to 1980

Summary

The »Mljet« National Park, located on the island of the same name (not far
from Dubrovnik), encompasses an area of 3103 ha, of which 2674 ha are covered
by forest. The island of Mljet is situated within the forest association of Orneto-
Quercetum ilicis H-ić. Evergreen oak stands (Quercus ilex L.) as coppice forest
and maquis are spread over an area of approx. 1400 ha, while the remaining area
is covered with Aleppo Pine stands (Pinus halepensis Mill.) either pure or mixed
with evergreen oak (Quercus ilex L.).

The area of the »Mljet« National Park belonged to the Benedictine monastery
from the beginning of the 12th century until the beginning of the 19th century
(the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic). The monastery was situated on the islet of
St. Mary in Veliko jezero (lake) which today incorporates the Melita hotel (Fig. 3).
Following the departure of the Benedictines from the island of Mljet their estate,
including the forests, became the property of the state, and today exists as an publicly-
owned property.

This article presents the results of forest taxation from the first management
plan in 1875 until the present day, arranged in 1980. Management plans have been
worked out only for the state owned forests, amounting to 2225 ha, (besides the
forest the area comprises 16.5 ha of forest land without vegetation and 307 (ha of
barren land). The average growing stock per 1 ha of evergreen oak stands, including
maques, amorts to 34 m»; pur stand of Aleppo Pine amounts to 135 m»; Aleppo
Pine with underlying maquis amounts to 93 m», and the stands in which Aleppo
Pine is found in groupwise arrangement or individual stams amounts to 26 m*.
