SUMMARY Additional Feeding of Game on Chestnut Seed kernels of the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) and the four Horse-chestnut species (Aesculus hippocastanum, Ae. octandra, Ae. discolor and Ae. pavia) were investigated. The seeds were analysed for the amounts of water, mineral matter, cellulose, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, in order to establish the seeds of which Chestnut species were nutritionally the most valuable as additional fodder for big game. According to the results obtained it may be concluded that seeds of Horse- chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) can replace maize and acorns as an additional game food. Although maize contains more proteins, Horse-chestnut seed is cheaper. The seeds of Red Horse-chestnut (Aesculus pavia) are nutritionally the most valuable. As additional game food these seeds can replace even barley (a high quality nutritient), the seeds being more over much cheaper too. |
