P. x E. cv. regenerata postigla je gotovo identične rezultate kao i
standardni kultivar P. x E. cv. robusta, nešto slabije rezultate P. x E. cv.
marilandica, dok je P. x E. klon 1-214 postigao najveći debljinski, visinski
i volumni prirast.
3. Praćenjem rezultata, koje će postići zasađeni kultivari i klon 1-214

Summary

THRIVING OF EUROPEAN-AMERICAN POPLARS IN THE POŽEGA VALLEY
The thriving of Populus euramericana cv. robusta, -cv. regenerata, -cv. marilandica
and -cl. 1-214 near the village of Trapari in the Požega Valley was examined
during the first ten years (1960-1969) after the establishment of an experimental
area. Temperature conditions of the investigated region are in general favourable.
More than half of annual rainfall occurs during the growing period. However, in
some years the amount of rainfall in the growing period varies noticeably.

The results of soil analysis suggest that the soil of the experimental plot
belongs to the pseudogley type. It is well known that such soils do not possess a
greater faculty of accumulating moisture, so that we have the impression that in
particular years, when in the growing season smaller amounts of rainfall occur,
or, when the rainfall is irregulary distributed, Poplars suffer from lack of moisture.

We correlate to this the stagnation of diameter, height and volume increments
in 1967 and 1968.

In relation to the standard clone (P. xE. cv. robusta) — under the same silvical
management — P. xE. cv. regenerata yielded a by 0´37% lower result, -cv. marilandica
also by 11.11% a lower one, while -cl. 1-214 produced a by 31.24% larger volume
per hectare.

A follow-up of the results, which will be achieved by the planted cultivars and
clone 1-214 in the next period should make possible a more correct estimate of
the justification of Poplar growing on such sites.
