A CONTRIBUTION TO THE CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS UNDER BEECH
AND FIR FOREST (ABIETI-FAGETUM PANNONICUM PROV.)
ON MEDVEDNICA

The author gives a contribution to the classification of soils on which the
beech and fir forest (Abieti-Fagetum pannonicum prov. Rauš 68) is developed
on Medvednica (Zagrebačka gora).

In the works concerning the pedogenetic investigations of Medvednica, that
is the areas of beech and fir forest, the terms for soil units and the criteria
of the classification system are used according to the works of: P. Kovačević ,

M. K a 1 i n i ć et al., 1967 and 1972, and according to the new classification of
Yugoslav soils prepared by A. Š k o r i ć, G. F i 1 i p o v s k i, M. Ć i r i ć, 1972.
The soils under the beech and fir forest on Medvednica were formed on
silicate rocks, and to a lesser extent on siliceous colluvium (diluvium). As a
contribution to the soil classification, this paper describes and separates the
following soil units:

Ranker s (Humous-siliceous soils) on paleozoic green schists, with dystric
and browned subtypes.

On Quartz-silicate metamorphic and sediment rocks (schists, quartz sandstones,
grindstones etc.) the dystric cambisols (acid brown soils) are
described and the following subtypes distinguished: typical acid brown soils,
humous dystric brown soils and the ilimerized subtype of dystric brown soil.
On quarz schists, the soil stage related to the humous subtype of dystric brown
soils is also described. According to its properties, this soil stage is a gradual
transition between acid brown and brown podzolic soils.

In the contact zones of acid brown soils and siliceous-calcareous diluvial
substrata of some parts of Medvednica, the description is given of the c o 11 u-
v i a 1 (diluvial) soils. The following subtypes are distiguished: dystric siliceous
colluvium and eutric siliceous colluvium.
