SUMMARY Beech heartwood formation in the region of the Zrinj ska Gora Mountain (Croatia) On the basis of the foregoing analyses relative to Beech heartwood formation in the region of the Zrinjska Gora Mountain the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. The maximal proportion of heartwood in the stem occurs between 4 m and 8 m of height above ground, and from this zone the heartwood volume decreases towards both the stump and the crown. 2. Heartwood formation in Beech trees is influenced by the following factors: a) age, b) rate (magnitude) of the mean diameter increment, c) flushing time, and d) crown volume. Heartwood formation in the mentioned region starts after the age of 75. The oldest tree without heartwood was a late flusher 111 years old. Late flushers commence their heartwood formation later, somewhere after 110 years of age, possessing a lower percentage of heartwood formation than early flushers. When analyzing heartwood formation, it is necessary to distinguish between, late^ and early-flushing trees, for late flushers — even with a lower increment rate and a smaller crown volume — exhibit a lower heartwood formation than early flushers. The proportion of heartwood is lower in higher mean diameter increment. In larger crown volumes, heartwood formation is smaller, although the crown volume magnitude also influences the magnitude of the mean diameter increment, so that these two influences are difficult to distinguish from one another, but nevertheless the influence of increment is more evident. 3. In view of the obove expositions we would be in favur of promoting late flushers when performing silvicultural interventions. Through thinnings and clearings we ought to make a faster growth and formation of regular crowns possible, but we should not ignore the merchantable length of the bole either. Through these silvicultural measures it would be possible to influence diminution of Beech heartwood formation. |
