A PEDOLOGIC SURWEY OF THE SOILS OF SEVERAL FOREST
MANAGEMENT UNITS IN THE MOUNTAIN RANGE OF MALA KAPELA

Summary

The author investigated the soils which are found within the Mala Kapela
mountain range for the purpose of typological research of forests and forest sites.

Investigated were the main soil types and their relation to the geomorphology of
terrain, geologic-lithologic formations and plant communities occuring in the area
investigated.

Following up the altitudinal differences from foothill up to the summit of the
mountain, it was established that there are represented in general all the developmental
stages of the soil on limestone, and that in the following series from summit
down to foothill: rendzina — brown soil — lessive soil occuring on limestone.

In soils occuring on dolomites two development lines are noted. On a massive
dolomite rock occurs a series of soils similar to those on limestone, while on the
dolomite bedrock, which is physically weathered into sand, the soils are retained in
the stage of rendzina.

Regarding the distribution of plant communities and soils the below stated
interrelationship was established:

With respect to altitudes, levelled sites of lessive soils, deep deluvial-diluvial
soils at the foot of hills, and in sinkholes and deep brown soils on limestone are
occupied by the forest community of Querco-carpinetum croaticum Horv.

On stony soils and brownized skeletal rendzinas, i. e. on xerotherimic sites of
southern aspect occurs a forest of Hop Hornbeam with Sesleria (Seslerio-Ostryetum
Horv. et H-ić).

Regarding altitudes, on brown soils which are prevailingly stony and developed
on limestones as well as on rendzinas there occurs near the mountain summits and
on the southern aspects a maritime Beech forest (Fagetum croaticum seslerietosum
Horv.), while on the northern aspects and on deeper brown calcareous soils there
occurs a montane Beech forest (Fagetum croaticum montanum Horv.).

At the next altitudinal step on brown calcareous and lessive soils there occurs
a forest of Beech and Fir (Fagetum croaticum abietetosum Horv.). This community
occurs also on rendzinas (on dolomite) and on trasitional soils towards limestone.
