SOME PEDOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FOREST ASSOCIATIONS IN THE AREA OF THE MOUNTAINS VIŠEVICA AND VELIKA JAVORNICA Summary Podological investigations of forest associations in a part of the Karst area of western Croatia (in direction Viševica — Velika Javornica) which is built up mainly of pure Jurassic limestones and under conditions of a perhumid chimate (P/E 128) yielded in the main the following results: 1. In the area of the association Fagetum croat. abietetosum Horv. the evolution of soils had the following pattern of development: black earth —> brown soil on limestone —»- illimerized soil. 2. In the forest associations studied there were established as the main and typical soils the following: In the association Fagetum croat. abietetosum Horv. the organic-mineral black earth, brown soil on limestone, illimerized soil on limestone, and deluvial soils of sinkholes, while, locally, also a deep rendzina on Quarternary accumulations occurs. Characteristic of the fades with Calamagrostis varia is an illimerized brown sub-Mediterranean soil, and of Sesleria autumnalis facies an illimerized terra rossa. A brown soil on limestone rich in humus (mull humus) is characteristic of the association Fagetum croat. subalpinum Horv. In association Calamagrostis-Abietetum tilietosum Horv. an organic-mineral black earth with mull humus is formed. The association Calamagrostis-Abietetum piceetosum Horv. is distinguished by and organic-mineral black earth with layers of modder and raw humus. 3. Within the association Fagetum croat. abietetosum Horv. on brown illimerized soil occurs an intense biological circulation of matter. A yearly leaf-(needle-) fall of trees and shrubs amounts to 2900^—3700 kg./ha., while late in October the mass of forest litter (without new leaf-fall) amounted to 3050—5300 kg./ha. The ratio of forest litter to the leaf-fall mass is 1.0 — 1.4. Under such conditions considerable differences in percent content of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the leaf-(needle-) fall of Fir, Beech, Common Maple and Wych Elm were established (Fig. 2). 4. The stcniness of the country and the soil depths are not in mutual relationship. Under the investigated conditions the forest trees on more stony grounds may occupy a smaller but also larger productive soil space per unit of area. |
