THE NAIL HOLDING PROPERTIES OF SOME EURAMERICAN POPLARS AND OF WHITE WILLOW Summary In these investigations five sample trees of ´robusta´ and ´marilandica´ Poplars and of White Willow, also four sample trees of ´serotina´ Poplar were chosen in the bottomland of the river Danube, near the town of Sombor. The Poplars trees were 14—16 year-old and those of White Willow 38—42, The main taxonomic data about sample trees are presented in Tab. 1. Specimens were taken from three positions in every sample tree, viz. at breast height, at two metres below where the crown begins, and at mid-distance between the mentioned two points. The heights at which specimens were taken are found in Tab. 2. Testings were carried out by means of an »Amsler« apparatus according to modified instructions by the A.S.T.M.-D.143-52 specifications. Specimens were sized 25 X 50 X 200 mm. Wire nails were sized 2,5 X 50 mm and driven 2,2 cm. into the afore-mentioned specimens. The average moisture content of the specimens at the moment of examination was: in Willow 6,73SV», in ´robusta´ 6,lS»/o, in ´marilandica´ 5,4g°/o and in ´serotina´ Poplar 6,20>%>. |
