DISTRIBUTION OF PETTERIA RAMENTACEA SIEBER (PRESSL.)
IN HERZEGOVINA


Summary


In investigations of Petteria ramentacea undertaken so far main stress was laid
en the study of its habitats as an endemic Balkan woody plant.


Recent investigations (Nadaždin 1965), however, have proved that the foliage
of this species represents a very good fodder for the small ruminants, because in
respect to the content of digestible proteins it can rival the most valuable hays of
legum´nocae.


Be´ng guided also by the economic importance of this species for the livestock
production of Herzegovina, and its value as a honey plant, the author presents a
rather dstailed description of the habitats of Petteria ramentacea according to the
administrative units (communities) in Herzegovina.


Because of excess exploitation for fuelwood and other needs the area stocked
with Petteria ramentacea is decreasing, which leads to a regression of the vegetation
and creation of denuded stony Karst grounds. Therefore the author siresses the
need for a more rational management and protection of this species, which, in addition
to its significance as an endemic Balkan plant also has great importance for
the animal husbandry and beekeeping of the extremely low yielding areas of the
sub-Meditterranean Karst.
