PROBLEMS OF AFFORESTATION OF THE LITTORAL KARST Summary In the afforestation of the Karst area are interested mainly the following three Dranches of the economy: forestry, tourism and agriculture. The most important of these is tourism, a fact testified by the author by the dala of the International Union of Tourist Organizations and Europsan Commission for Forestry (FAO), and especially by data on an excessive tourist exploitation and high tourist rent of forests established on the coasts af the Adriatic sea. On the basis of a historical review of the Karst afforestation and an analysis of the ecologic and economic significance of the forest tree species, the author comes in connexjpn with his previous studies to the preliminary conclusion that for afforestation purposes the following principal species of the genus Pinus may be chosen: a; in the eu-Mediterranean area P. halepensis, P. pinaster (maritima) and P. brutia, b) in the warmer zone of the sub-Mediterranean area P. brutia, c) in the colder zone of the sub-Mediterranean area P. nigra, d) in more humid soils and along the coast bf fresh and salt waters the genus Populus. Those are rough averages. When larger invesments are made for an artificial establishment of forest stands, deeper, exhaustive investigations of the tree species and their varieties and of individual sites are neccessary. |
