PRACTICAL VALUE OF OCULAR AND LABORATORY ASSESSMENT
OF THE QUALITY OF FOREST-TREE SEEDS


Summary


In this work is described the procedure performed in the Institute of Forest
Research, PR of Serbia, Beograd, in 1950—1954, relating to the testing of forest-tree
seeds. Described are 4 methods employed in the tests, i.e.: determination of the percentage
of sound seeds in the stratificate and in Krstić´s germinator by applying a
chemical method of colouring embryos with indigo carmine, and assessing the quality
of seeds by the ocular method in cutting seeds with a sharp tool.


The result of all these tests is presented in a table. Greatest deviations as to the
percentage of sound seeds were obtained by the ocular method. These diviations in
relation to the results obtained in the germinator average about 9%. The error
occurring in the ocular assessment of the germinability of seed can be ignored when
using the seed for the production of the planting stock or in the re-establishement
of forests by sowing.
