Summary

TIMBER´S CHARACTERISTICS OF WHITE WILLOW (SALIX ALBA L.)

In this article are described the results of investigations on 4 sample trees of
white willow (S. alba L.) from the flooded area of the river Danube, near the town
Sombor. The sample-trees were selected in the natural forest as »plus-trees«.

The main data about sample-trees are given in tab. la.
Discs from each sample-trees for investigations of plysical properties were cut
at breast-height (1,30 m), 3,30, 5,30, 8,30, 10,30, 12,30, 14,30 and 17,30 meters.
Breadth of annual rings, percentage of spring-wood and basic density are investigated
for all above mentioned heights, but other physical properties are investigated
only for breast-height.
All physical properties were tested in the decades: 1—10, 11—20, 21—30, 31—40
and above 41 years.
Wood fibre samples were taken from the east side the discs at 1,30, 3,30 and
third disc was cut at heights varying from 5,0 to 8,7 m. i. e. average 6,60 meter.
Samples were taken from the growth ring of 10. 20, 30 and 40 years age from above
mentioned heights. Both late and early wood fibres were examined. After maceration
in chromic-nitric-acetic acid from every sample were taken at random 360 fibers
on a average for investigation of fibre´s lengths. Diameters are measured on
macerated materials in mid-length taken at random cca 50 pieces.
Fibre length measurements were made by means of an A. O. Spencer microscope
with 50 X magnification, till breadth of fibres, dameter of lumen and double-
wall thickness with 215 X magnification.
Accuracy of measurement of fibre length was 0,1 mm, till for other fibre dimensions-
0,0001 mm.

Following characteristics were investigated:

a)
wood fibre characteristics: fibre length, fibre breadth, diameter of lumen and

double-wall thickness.
