AN ESTIMATE OF THE DEGREE OF HERITABILITY OF HEIGHTS AND
DIAMETERS IN WHITE WILLOW (Salix alba L.) COMPUTED FROM A CLONAL
TEST OF 1/1 OLD PLANTS

Summary

On an experimental plot sized 4 X 7.5 m were set cuttings of White Willow
(Salix alba L.) spaced 30 X 20 cm, in 5 replications. Of each clone there were set

out 55 cuttings. For the formation cf arithmetical means of heights and diameters
according to the replications there were taken measurements in all clones of the
first ten plants in the replication The degree of heritability of heights and diameters
was computed according to formulae by Whrigt and Van Buijtenen,
E i n s p e h r, and Joharsson.
On the basis of the results obtained the following can be concluded:

1.
The heritability of heights in White Willow (Salix alba L.) — computed from
the clonal test fcr the 1/1 years old plants ranges in l´mits between 73 and
93´A>, while the heritability of diameters between 69 and 927o;
2.
Both results point to the that the height and diameter increments are to a
greater extent conditioned by heredity than by environment;
3.
When comparing with each other the results obtained for the inheritance of
heights, and diameters we come to the conclusion that the height increment
is subject to a greater extent to the genetic control than the diameter increment;
4.
The computed values for the heritability of heights and diameters are not
the parameters of a population but of an individual experiment.
