MEETING OF MEMBERS OF SECTION 22 OF THE INTERNATIONAL
UNION OF FOREST RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS IN YUGOSLAVIA


It gives me great pleasure to contribute a brief introduction to this special
issue of »Šumarski List« which contains the papers persented by members of
Section 22 of I.U.F.R.O. during the meeting held in Yugoslavia from 13th to
17th September, 1965.


The meeting was notable in many ways, first and foremost for the warm
hospitality extended to us by foresters in Yugoslavia, notably Mr. Mirko Sučević,
Chief of the Forest Service and members of his staff, by the members
of the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb, and the Directors and staff of the two
forest research institutes in Yugoslavia. The Secretary of the meeting was
Professor Mirko Vidaković and a special word of thanks is due to him for
his fine work on behalf of Section 22 of I.U.F.R.O.


Those who attended the meeting were able to see some of the forest
genetics and tree breeding research being done in Yugoslavia and to gain a
good impression of the fine forests of that country which are of the greatest
importance to Yugoslavia and also, through the medium of provenance and
forest genetics research and tree breeding, to many other countries.


The subjects discussed during the working sessions in Zagreb included the
selection of plus trees, the preservation of the gene pool in natural stands and
the production and significance within and between species hybrids. The
discussions were notable for the free and lively exchange of views between
forest geneticists and tree breeders from seventeen countries.


It remains for me to thank our Yugoslav hosts most warmly for all their
work for us and to wish Yugoslav foresters and research workers good success
in their own work.

ŠUMARSKIH ISTRAŽIVAČKIH ORGANIZACIJA U JUGOSLAVIJI


Čini mi veliko zadovoljstvo da napišem kratki uvod za posebni svezak
»Šumarskog lista«. Taj svezak donosi radove koje su podnijeli članovi Sekcije
22 I.U.F.R.O.-ia za vrijeme savjetovanja, održanog u Jugoslaviji od 13. do 17.
rujna 1965. godine.
