UTILIZATION OF ILLIMERIZED SOILS FOR THE CULTIVATION OF
CONIFERS IN THE DISTRICT OF BJELOVAR

Summary

Through investigations of the low hilly terrains of Northern Croatia along the
Bilogora—Moslavačka gora Mountain Range the presence of illimerized soils on the
loess and »fine sands« of diluvial age was established. The natural fertility of these
soils is dealt with from the standpoint of their suitability for intensive cultivation
of fast-growth conifers. It was established that these soils possess a high level of
natural fertility. They are well supplied with soluble phosphorus. A comparison of
the contens of humus and nitrogen under a 100-year-old Oak stand with the contents
of humus and nitrogen on a clear and tilled ground indicates that the mineralization
of humus and the diminnution of nitrogen proceed very quickly in this soil under
conditions of clear cutting and mechanical tillage of the soil. The suggestions made
for the utilization of these soils for the intensive production of conifers aim at the
clear cutting of the existing degraded forests and the mechanical tillage of the soil
being restricted, with the purpose to preserve the fertility of these soils. In order to
protect the soil on sloping terrains against run-off and water erosion, a denser
planting of quality seedlings is planned.
