PROBLEMS OF PHYTOCOENOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE

Summary

In this paper the author avails himself of the work of R. Bach, R. Kuoch
and M. Moore (1962), and of S. Rauschert (1963), and discusses the rules of
the up-to-date phytocoenological nomenclature with regard to its application in
forest practice.

Special attention is paid to the rules introduced in practice for the formation
of Latin names for forest communities. Several rules for the formation of names of
the Yugoslav forest communities are also described.

Given are also examples of the Latin titles of the most important genera and
species, with their endings in the nominative and genitive cases, the stems and binding
vowels. These elements are of special importance when forming the names of
plant communities.

Farther, discussed are changes in the nomenclature of forest communities in
conection with the new principles of the phytocoenological system of naming. Difficulties
encountered in forest practice because of the changes of the names of plant
communities are emphasized. These difficulties could be surmounted through the
joint efforts by botanists, phytocoenologists and foresters engaged in this particular
domain.
