ON THE OCCASION OF THE 150th ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH OF JOSIP PANCIĆ


Summary


In the article is described the life and work of Dr. Josip Pančić born on the
Croatian Seabord, and who worked in Serbia for 42 years (1846—1888), first as a
physician in Kragujevac, later as a professor of botany at the Phylosophical Faculty
of the Universitj´ (»Velika škola«) in Beograd. He organized and developed investigations
in the field of natural sciences in Serbia. He was an excellent florist and
systematist of plants. He discovered 102 new plants among which also the well-
known Picea omorika Pančić is found. He arranged a cabinet of natural sciences with
a herbarium of over 30,000 specimens. He founded and arranged a botanical gardens.
He was a rector of the University (»Velika škola«) for many years, member of Parliament,
vice-chairman of the Parliament, Privy Councillor, corresponding member
of many scientific institutions, and chairman of Serbian Academy of Sciences. He
wrote a great number of scientific papers. He was the author of the first Serbian
textbook of botany, zoology, mineralogy and geology, as well as the first Serbian
dendrology. He was buried in a mausoleum on Mt. Kopaonik.
